did we ever get the turbo petrol 4runner?
I've been told there was a turbo petrol 4 runner released in the USA, the 2 door ones.
Did we ever receive it here? I'd have to guess no since we always get the poverty packs

Have a look at the 1986 one. That's when it came in apparently
I was thinking it would be a bolt on & easily approved mod if we ever had them delivered
Cheesepony, are you sure you are talking about the same thing? Mick is referring to the 22R petrol with EFI and turbo sold for about 18months in the US. I get the feeling that you are talking about the 2LT, japanese market turbodiesel.
The turbo 4cyl petrol car was only ever for the US market, and the complete lack of any of these motors coming out of import wreckers in Japan might mean that it was only ever sold in the US.
Not very popular, it seems that the best thing about them is the gearbox - stronger and with a shorter 1st gear, they are the hot ticket now.
I am guessing that these motors must have been trouble- I have never seen any tech or anything on them, ever. I think they put out about 140hp.
I think that a 3RZ out of a 1996- hilux might be the go - as much power, an easy fit, and the same power and probably torque.

always informative gwagensteve I'm pretty sure Cheesepony was referring to the wrong engine type.Gwagensteve wrote: I think that a 3RZ out of a 1996- hilux might be the go - as much power, an easy fit, and the same power and probably torque.
Tell me is the 3rz the 2.7 efi 4 banger I have heard good things about those. What auto gearbox do they bolt to
The turbo 4Runners in the US have a 22R-TE and automatic gearbox. The turbo HiLux (SR5) in the US had a 22R-TE and R151F gearbox with 23 splined input shaft on a gear driven Tcase.
Nothing wrong with the motors, just scarce. They have forged low compression pistons, and larger combustion chambers in the heads. Some guys install a regular head on them for increased power. The front cover and oil pump is different than the 22R-E.
Some guys do this swap on them: http://www.siestaoff-road.web1000.com/tbody.html

The 2wd T100 3RZ-FE 2.7 liter comes with a W58 gearbox in the US. It's bellhousing will bolt up to a G52/G54, or W56. Search the forum at www.marlincrawler.com for 3RZ-FE and you'll find lots of info there about guys swapping them into 1st and 2nd generation 4x4 pickups. Seems the 2wd T100 is what you want for a front cut.
