I've been running a 3.9 with 3.5 manifold and injection (flapper AFM) gear for about a year now, the engine runs ok starts every time and doesn't give me any problems exept it uses lots of fuel and doesn't offer much performance. I have the 3.9 manifold injection gear including fuel rail Loom AFM and ECU but when i did the engine converion a year ago i couldn't get it running on the Hot-wire injection (i think it's called that) because of some fault. So i just put the old 3.5 gear back on.
Are the size of my 3.5 injectors or Fuel rail limiting my performance? because it feels like the engine won't pull after 4000rpm especially compared to the way our 98 disco V8 did. Could i just fit a powerchip "piggyback" ecu to the 3.5 setup and would that fix the power problem or should i put the 3.9 manifold back on and fit a fully programable ecu that does away with AFM and ECU? my budget is around $1300. I need to do somthing because i feeel like i'm waisting the engine performane, plus i have the 3.9 maniflod and bigger rail in the shed doing nothing! power isn't the only problem im sure it's using more fuel than it should.

Toby,
The engine didn't do much over 4500 rpm when I had it but the earlier L-ject system doesn't help and they can be restricti e. We have a bloke in the club with a 4.6 running the old L-Ject like yours and he has the same problem around the rev range you specify.
If you can get the hot-wire gear that I sold with it should be fine. Glad to hear that the engine has been trouble-free, I told you it was a ripper 3.9
Look into maybe an aftermarket set-up as well because you could be up for quite a bit of dosh by the time you fiddle around with the std. hot-wire gear, but use the fuel rail and looom and plum it in somewhat, plenty of people here have done so.
Good luck with it.
