I found a SUPER Wiring loom on ebay for $110 for my Hilux but a mate told me all I need to do is just run a heavy wire straight from the battery through a relay and use the existing wires as the power to the relay for each the low and the high beams.
Is this going to give the same results for under $50 ?

Hi whiteknight, it’s pretty straight forward to do it yourself and if you want to have a go, try this site, there’s a basic headlight wiring diagram that should give you some idea on how and what is needed.

Whiteknight, on a toyota you have to run something on the original headlight loom to put a load on it, they use some weird switch in the dash that wont completely change from low to high beam if there isn't enough load on the original loom.
You can tell if its wrong by holding a sheet of paper or similar infront of the headlight, one low beam you will have a flat wide "light shape" when you go to high beam that flat shape should go away and be replaced by a square "light shape".
If the flat shape is still (at the same time as the square shape) then both filaments in the globe are running and you will burn out your globes real quick.
Its easy to put a load on the old loom, if your lazy you can go to a piranha off road distributor and ask for a "circuit completer" for about $25-$30 or you can make you own out of a indicator or stop light (try and use a 21W bulb) and just hook that in, one wire to earth pin on the origianl headlight plug, other wire to the High/low beam positive (cant remember which one, just try one and see if both filiments are running.
If you dont want to make one yourself let me know I make them exactly the same as Piranha's Super Loom, but without the price tag, their warranty, instructions etc. PM me if you interested.

the hilux will run a negative switching light circuit. don't need a load in it to operate upgraded loom, only need one diode and resistor to enable conversion to standard positive switgching (plus correct operation) loom

Did you have to do anything special to load the old circuit like what has been mentioned above? I was originally just going to run 2 x 40amp relays with some nice wiring from the original - Should get out of if for under $50 easily. How do you fix up the highbeam indicator if it matters I suppose..
