60 Series Rear Diff/ Tail Shaft Bearing

Post by vSAHARAx »

Hey All, need a little help, took the Cruiser for its first decent off-road trip yesterday, got home last night, woke up this morning and the rear diff is leaking oil from where the tail shaft goes in. I know this is not going to be good but could someone please break the news on roughly what it will cost and how hard it is to change the bearing and the seal?

Also where is the best place to buy a bearing and seal or what ever i need in Brizzy.

Cheers Troy.

Not sure on the bearing, but mine was doing the same after the last time i took it out, with diff oil being flicked up everywhere underneath my 4by.

Just replaced the rear seal, only cost $10, topped up the oil and was all done in a little over an 2hrs. Probably would be quicker, but it was my first time changing one, and was just going by the old workshop manual.

I was talking to dad before and he said they have 2 tapered bearings and if it isnt noisy (which they arnt, no noise or any vibration) all it should need is a new seal and adjust the bearing and she should be sweet. whee did u get the seal from??? Toyota??? somewhere else???

Get a seal and new nut from the Toyota dealer. The genuine seals are better quality and have an extra rubber flap to keep debris from getting to the shaft, seals sorced from bearing and seal suppliers may not have the extra rubber flap. You need a new pinion nut as the nut is staked when tight and usually damaged when removing. The seal should be under $20 and the nut under $10 with oil top the repairs should be done under $50 and take about 1 Hr.
