overfilled sump

Post by mickyd555 »

ive put too much oil in my TD42 and drove it yesterday without realising. it was blowing some blue smoke yesterday after some hard driveing and delux reckopns he was choking on some preety bad fumes in the vehicle following. apart from draining it out to the correct level, will i need to do anything else (will it have caused any damage to anything else). im due for a change anyway, so ill get onto that before driving it again, but should i check anything else while im there?

drain the oil to the correct level, and cross the fingers that you haven't damaged the engine.
Theres not much else you can do.
To much oil can sometimes cause seals to blow and as you noticed will cause an engine to blow smoke.

Oh yeah, with turbo's i beleive there is a chance that some of the oil could end up in the turbo but this is an area i dont know much about.

mines N/A, so no worries about the turbo.........its only about half a litre more than it should be, and 10L fills it. it should be cool i hope

I would have thought that only 1/2 a litre too much oil would do anything.

More than likely an engine problem or a oil leak.

im guessing on the half litre amount. im assuming that between the empty mark and the full mark would be one litre. and going off that im guessing half a litre. in anycase, i think the engine may need some work anyway.......

There is still a fair bit of space between the full mark on the dipstick and the lowest point of the crankshaft. If you over filled it by the amount you mention, i think it would be just level or just slightly above the windage tray.

Half a litre won't hurt, it'd burn it off anyway.

The windage tray is a type of baffle welded into the top of the sump to prevent oil surging up into the cylinder bores/connecting rods during hard braking etc. When i had the sump off my TD42 for a re-build last year, i noticed that there is a fair amount of space between the top of the windage tray and bottom of a connecting rod cap in its lowest position. The full mark on the dipstick when in position, also is a bit below the underneath of the windage tray. So overfilling the sump by a litre or so 'shouldnt' cause any problems.......
