Is it worth it to swap my 3.5L Fuel Injected V8 for a Diesel out of a Disco.
I wouldn't say my 3.5L V8 is a power plant. How much power am I actually losing? I am mainly concerned about my off road abilities. I have a ZF auto. I have read that they can be tweaked.
I have an 89 Rangie. I already have changed the borg warner transfer case to an LT230 out of a Disco.
How much would the conversion cost roughly and what probs am I likely to come across.
How heavy is the diesel compared to the V8?
Be as long winded as you like. The more opinions and info the better.
Thanks
Shane

Which diesel are you referring to?
TD5 would be expensive to buy, but the power would only be a problem if having more than your V8 is a problem. You can easily get over 150kw out of them.
The Isuzu diesel would probably be the one to look at, but finding a good one with relatively good mileage and in good condition might be a task. They can be tweaked - more fuel delivery, exhaust upgrade - to make some good power.
They are heavier than the V8, but not by that much really. They are only a 2.5l engine, so by comparison to the Yota/Datto donks, they are lightweights.
I would have a look at the purchase price difference between the TD5 and the 200/300TDi Isuzu and going from there. Either way, the saving in fuel economy alone will make the conversion worthwhile $ wise. Even at the current rate of diesel.

Because of the weight issue I was looking at the 2.5L engine. Thanks so far.

No matter what engine you fit the conversion about the same as your rangie is worth or more. If you fit a tdi, you will have to either modify the zf or get one from a tdi disco - you cant just bolt a tdi to your existing auto as you will go no where. As lrhybrid has done its best to get the running gear from a wrecked disco and swap all over to the rangie. For the cost you could by a tdi disco !
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
