Recovery on IFS without recovery points

Im planning a trip out with a few newby's to 4wding. A Pajero, Prado etc.
If i have to recover them and they don't have a proper point at the front what do i hook the snatch strap on to?
On a live axle you can get away with wraping the strap around the axle, but what do you do with a IFS?(other than the obvious of installing recovery points, which i already have.)???

I would recommend wrapping it around the suspension a arm. Or alternatively the chassis itself near a crossbrace so it can't slide futher forward.

Dont use the nudge bar cos plenty of them get ripped off...

I did use one once on a frontera and even with an ultra gentle recovery *(at maybe 2kph - a tow not a snatch out of a very easy recovery point) we got him out and it had moved an inch or so.

I wouldn't do a full snatch recovery using the axel housing, but a tow out done V-E-R-Y gently would be ok. There are quite a few bolts holding the housing in place.

But best thing is to tell them to install hooks, or stay home.

i would, just get it round the axle and one arm on a solid and yoink it
in normal driving the axle mounts are recieving heaps of loading and tension etc etc, after all its still the main item that propells the vehicle.

Snatching from the center could be silly and cause the diff to bend but to the side and around a link i think is fairly safe.

just give the strap to the driver thats stuck and tell him/her to hold on REAL tight.

but seriously just tell them to goto the local 4B shop and get some hooks, i think even places like repco and supercheap also have load rated hooks.

I have to agree and say get recovery points, they are not expensive, and it means you wont feel guilty about parting a nudge bar from the car or bending an integral part of the running gear

tell your mates they cant come unless they have recovory hooks, anything else is going to either get someone hurt or bugger there truck. they cost bugger all and are simple to fit

if ur mate has the curent model pajero it has two recovery points up front but u have to use both at same time so take some chain with u to spread the load as for the prado in the pasenger window out the drivers window.

there is aftermarket recovery points to replace the factory tie down points on prados

sounds like i might leave them stuck or maybe pull them out backwards and get them to reverse through the bog hole so i can recover them backwards!!!
Recovery points are such a basic reqirement, but its good to look at the likely possibility that you will come across someone without them.

There cheap as chips and they'll really wish they'd installed them when there stuck in the middle of a bog hole, that's when there worth there weight and more in gold.$$$$ Real cheap insurance.

there is not easy spots to mount them on all 4wds - especially at the front.

Dont judge too harshly - it's not just a case of not spending $20.

It could be a case of not drilling holes in your $80k car as much as the $20.

The ADR product looks good. I noticed the other day that the Freelander with the IRS has two recovery loops attached the frame between the two rear pivot points for the lower control arms.

I have an XL-7 and have the same issue at the front, the 'plastic' bumper covers the chassis rails and does not allow any access to anything substantial under the vehicle. I have taken mine off and am in the process of fitting an allow bar. The next step is mount recovery hooks to the chassis rails. I am now thinking of moutning someting similar to the ADR to the lower control arm mounts as well.
