Thought I had seen this before but can't find it.
Does anyone know how to mod the standard wiring harness so that the front locker can be actuated independantly ?

I'm assuming you have just installed a rear locker AFTER you have had your front in for a while. I had the same problem in my wagon, I queried ARB about this and they said it was the way the loom is built. I rewired a section of the loom to switch them on independently, I don't remember what I did but I can have a look tomorrow fro you.

all you had to do was join a wire to one of the wires on no 1 switch [red?] and cut a wire on no 2 [yellow?] and join the added wire to the cut wire that goes into no 2.
been a looong time since i did it to my old 60 series so i cant really remember it that well.
check before cutting anything
this was about 10 years ago so wiring looms may have changed as this was on the old type switches.

Ok, I've just had a look. My front lock is on switch 1 on the loom and rear lock on switch 2, compressor on isolating switch. remove the yellow cable from "2" on switch 2. solder a small length of cable (150mm of 10A) to red "3" on isolating switch (compressor), then attach this cable to "2" on switch 2 (with sheathed crimp) they should now work independently.
Built, not bought.
I queried this with ARB once and they said having the front locker on only (80 series) can lead to front diff failers so they designed the wiring to only allow the front to engauge when the rear is on. (may not be true !)
My question is why would it be nessasary to have the front on with out the rear ?

The loom is designed to have one set of wires as the primary locker, one set of wires for the compressor and the one set of wires as the secondary locker. The loom is not labelled specifically 'Locker front', 'Locker rear'. The theory behind the loom design was so the primary locker was the rear and the secondary locker was the front. The rear axle being more durable than the front on 99% of vehicles, this was the natural choice as the primary locker for longevity of working parts. Therefore through the design of the loom, you could engage the rear locker as the first choice, THEN engage the front locker if you needed additional assistance. Now in a lot of installations (ie LSD in rear) most people opt to have a front ARB installed and leave the rear LSD installed. In this instance the front locker is usually hooked up to the primary side of the loom so it can be activated as the primary locker.
To answer the question about why you want control over the front independently to the rear - isn't that why you bought an ARB in the first place, to have complete control? It's all about choices - I'm a control freak...

i modded my harness for tha same reason as u say Area54.. the selectability..
also if on a side slop u need 2 bring the front up hill and with the rear in it wants 2 push u so u turn the rear off and the front on hook it hard lock up the hill stand of it and then u face uphill
thats the main reason that i thought bout doin it.
i know u dont have great steering with the front locker on but u get the idea
