I own a SWB DB4.2 Auto Maverick and the torque converter needs replacing. I don't know alot about them and have heard a converter with a lower lockup speed might be worth concidering when I replace it.
This will supposedly be advantageous when 4wding and also generate less heat. Both of these would be good if they are true. I already have a remote transmission cooler and still have heat issues under certain circumstances.
Any constructive comments/recommendations regarding what options are worth concidering from people with auto trans. experience would be appreciated.
Converters , are like a clutch Mex , ( but totally different )
In as much as , we can slip the clutch to create a little more usable torque
at a very low speed, but while doing this we create heat .
Now a converter can do the same only the fluid is doing the driving,
a high stall converter does alot of this sliping until the "stall speed is reached " at this piont both the vanes within the converter atian the same speed or RPM ,and the fliud at and over the stall speed isnt getting the shit beat out of it and dosnt heat as much, so yes a lower stall converter will reduce some heat , but if you don,t have good gearing low gearing in the transfer or diffs it could make the car baulk at some obsticles that the standard converter will climb .
