60 series power steering

Post by sambo »

Looking at fixing my power steering box cos it is really worn and leaks a fair bit. But i heard that an 80series box will bolt straight on to a 60series. Does anyone know if this is true and will it produce lighter steering than if i fix up the current one.

Cheers

I am fairly sure there is a difference between early and later model 60/62 series steering boxes from memory(slight difference in bolt pattern).... so I'd say the 80 might even be different again... if not, it might be the same as the later model 62 series ones.
When in doubt..... UTE-ERIZE it!!!

I'm not real sure on that powersteering question but could be interested as may have to replace mine.

Mine is an FJ60 and it appears to leak out of the cap when under high load (e.g. trying to stick the front wheel on a termite mound). Why the hell does this happen has me bugRd?

Also I have noticed that toyota put the return line for the power steering in a really dumb place (on top of the front cross member. Anyhow, mine is now crushed to the poophouse. We tried to remidy this by joing the output hose straight onto the input housing. As I understand the leght of the hose and the fact it went into a metal hose was for cooling purposes. So will this root my steering pump or what? It ran fine after we did it but now feels a little heavy.

Any help would be much appretiated.

You will find your fluid could boil and then offer no lubricating function. This will be the point where you most need it too, right when your half way up some 4by hill.

You can get better power steering coolers that mount infront of your radiator or wherever you want, but they arent cheap (due to PSI) and they will probably be a pain if you have to get the radiator out for some reason.

Ok that is fine, so let's say that I get another length of that pipe I had and move it somewhere more practicle, I assume that wouls be fine. Now based on that assumption what if I had the same ammount of that pipe and changed th shape to fit infront of the radiator, would this effect the steering pump at all?

On my 60, when the wheel is at full lock, be it either side, I can hear like a squirting noise or spray noise. Is this the pump? I know it's bad, but how bad?

I bought my 60 about 3 years ago and had p/s leaking, air was getting in the system and it would squeal until you bled it (turned it from lock to lock a few times). I think there was 2 types, vien and slipper, i've got slipper, this was on a 2H with power steering mounted front lower right side. You can get a rebuild kit from Toyota and get the bore honed if not too bad. Not a hard job, but you have to pull the radiator out. If you have a slipper type, just be careful not to loose all the little springs. I havn't had to even top it up since it's been done. Hope this is helpful.

yep that should be alright. The pipe is pretty hard tho so be careful when you bend it, use a pipe bender spring thing (not sure what ya call em lol) if you have access to one.

Well put it this way, a 60 series porwersteering box would be quite old in technology and as my mate Joycey always puts it, Toyota bring out and upgraded series for a reason...cause it's updated you nob! (thanks Joycey always appretiate your input). So, old mate reckons if you can actually manage to get one on it would be an improvement to your steerinf no worries.

But for total conformation I suggest you ask dumbdunce on the stump dumbdunce thread. He is the yota guru.

p.s. sorry bout the thread hi-jack :finger: :D
