I blew the front diff in my 4runner a while ago, and finally got around to having a crack at fitting a 2nd hand one I got on the weekend. The replacement diff I bought was fitted with the ADD setup (automatic disconnecting diff), which my 4runner doesn't have.
I thought I had read somewhere that the only thing needed to do to converst the ADD diff to a normal one was unbolt the passenger side axle and swap them over.
It all seems as though it would fit bolt back together as above, but I thought I'd double check this just in case.
You can see in the pics, the NON add diff has a seal where the axle goes into the centre, and doesn't seem to have a bearing for the axle to run on.
Where as the ADD diff, doesn't have this seal, but has a roller pin type bearing (I gorget the proper name) for the axle to run on.
So....
1. Can I just buy a new NON add type seal for the passenger side of the housing and then fit the NON add axle with the roller pin type bearing still in the centre.
or 2. Do I need to remove that roller pin type bearing and get the same bearings, bushes seals, whaterver that are in the original diff then use all that??
NON ADD Diff - Has the seal, and no bearing.
The replacement ADD Diff - Doens't have the seal, but has a roller pin type bearing.

Thats what I wanted to here...... Thanks HG
I had a "Nissan Driver" mate come over this arve, and he didn't think it was a good idea at all......thought the axle surface where the needle bearing (thats the name I was looking for) would not be heat treated and it'll all f@#k up eventually......
Just wish I had the $$$ to stick a locker in the front while its out.

If you look at the top pic you can see about a dozen teeth missing off the crown wheel.....the pinion also has some teeth missing. If you need moe pics of the damage, I can get some tonight.
Mine broke using too much right foot but, racing in the hill climb at Rover Parks "Battle of the States"......but I still managed to get first place, even when the diff had blown on the first part of the climb.
This pic was taking shortly before detonation.
