Hilux - dual tank?

Post by Bogged Again »

G'day,

I have 1996 dual cab Hilux and am looking at ways to increase the fuel capacity over the standard 65L unit. I realise that there are aftermarket 130L units out there but the asking price for one of these is ~$1000 fitted. Second-hand units are rare as the proverbial hens tooth.

My question: Has anyone slung another tank underneath their Hilux? Successful or not and what problems did you encounter.

Thanks and best regards,

Bogged Again. :)

My 91 dual cab had a second tank when I bought it.....i took it out a few months back when the fuel pump died.

I still have it, its a, 90L unit. Had a filler hose on passenger side of tub to fill it and then a fuel pump wired up and a switch in the cabin on the dash for when i needed to move it over to the main tank. Never had any problems with the setp until the little pump carked it. I could have easily just got a new pump and kept it on the truck, but I decided on removing it altogether.

Ill look for some pics, but Im not sure if ill have any.

If you dont want to pay the price , then maybe find a local engineering shop willing o make something up for you. many of these guys do stuff like this or can pint you in the right direction. bear in mind the reason the long range tanks are expensive is beouse hey are weird shaped and have bits koking all over the place to get a large as possible capacity in a small area.

In my GU I have a long range tank where the spare would be, so is it possible for you to get something fabed up to sit there and put the spare in the tray? or maybe a shallow one between the chassis and tray? maybe if ther is not much room, put the tray on 1 or 2 " body lift block and make the room, I did that to get a water tank under mine
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!

I make tanks as part of a small business i have going and have made a 120L aux tank for a guy with a 02 hilux. fitted under the tray where the spare went.

If you want i could make one for you or anyone else.
