diff ratios.

Post by muppet_man67 »

I jacked the front right wheel in the air, transfer was in 2wd. I rotated the drive shaft twice and the wheel rotated once plus a few degrees. Just to check I wasnt imagining the extra rotation in the wheel I did it again. and the wheel rotated a few degrees further. (definatly not imagining)

What diff ratio do I have. 3.9 or 4.1?

they are widetrack diffs under a narrowtrack lwb. based on what I did, what ratios are they likely to be?

wt is 3.7 rat
nt is 3.9
it could be either depending.
the only diff is the front axels in wts are smaller than nts  (good ideah suzuki)
so ya just swap sungears or hemisphers!
sorry if this donst help

you need to rotate tail shaft more times so wheel goes round more times, then do your maths, it will be more accurate.
3:9 to 3:7 not great enough difference unless you do more rotations. very unlikely to be 4:1, tho not entirely impossible.

doesnt really help because the diffs are far from stock there is a good chance that the centers may also be different. I dont know the history of the car hence why im trying to figure it out manually.

not sure if you want to. but it hasn't been sugested.
just pull the centre out and count the teeth on it?

one thing red_zook brought up is the axle difference.
I had no trouble putting my NT centres into my WT diffs, and then I put 5.12's into them and I just pulled them straight out of the NT diffs that I brought with them in.
are you sure the splines are different?

Germo.....Centres (here's my chinese whisper...)

LJ80 have 4.6 centres
1 litre (NT) have 4.1 centres
1.3 litre (NT) have 3.9 centres
1.3 litre (WT) have 3.7 centres

Vitara's...to my limited knowledge they came in 4.6's and 5.1's

NT come in two types, 1 litre, and 1.3.
They are the same width, but have different centres, principally the spline count of the shafts.

So, for the record, NT 1.3 centres can be used in WT housings (and Vica-versa).

Similarly, 1 litre centres can be used in LJ50 & 80 Diffs (and Vica-versa)

As for the gearing question, lift both wheel into the air, lock the hubs(you did do that before didn't you?), apply air locker and rotate the shaft......

Sam you have to make sure that both wheels are off the ground and turn together. If you only lift one tyre off the ground, you get the ratio throught the diff and the spider gears, which is 2:1 (plus the axle ratio) Have you ever noticed in an open diffed car that when one wheel is spinning, it spins really quick.

Guessing by your car and its history, check the flange sizes. If it has big bolt (10mm bolt) flanges with the WT pattern then the diffs are probably straight out of the WT donor car (3.7:1) if it has 8mm bolt flanges (NT pattern) then I'd guess it has the NT 3.9 diffs.

otherwise lift both tyres off the ground and count the turns of the pinion turns when both wheels go round once. This is the only accurate way without pulling the diff out and counting the teeth.
