Turbo Timer

I went to Autobarn to buy a turbo timer for my 2.8d Hilux and the guys there said that the timers they have wont suit my car becuase it has a manual fuel pump and all of theirs are for petrol or Diesels with electronic pumps?

whats the go there? So that means i cant pick up one of those cheapies from E-Bay either?

What type do I need for a Diesel with manual fuel pump?

the way hilux hand breaks are and if u got a manual i wouldnt bother with a turbo timer as ur truck will prolly roll away, just sit in it for the extra 30secs letting it idle and the turn it off.

i tighten mine up all the time... I can lock up the rear MT claws on bitumen at speed...

that seems odd as i thaught turbo timers simply held the ignition on for 30 seconds, nothing to do with the fuel system at all???

My dad had my sisters old turbo timer out of her 180sx fitted to his 2000 hilux (3litre td), funnily enough by autobarn, and they didnt mention that then...

the 2000 model you will find probably has an electronic diesel fuel pump.

I threw an old bes timer in my hilux yesterday, was easy as. 3 wires.
red 12v constant, black earth, blue ignition circuit, was just trial and error as there are 2 ignition circuits in an ln106 lux so the first one we tried kept the power on to the dash lights etc and the second was the right one to keep the engine running.
And like Mick said, the hand brake can be adjusted pretty well, it's just a matter of trust, or parking on flat ground.

it has nothing to do with the fual pump, it cuts off the inition and in the case of a diesel with a mech pump the ignition cuts of the raill so WTF are they talking about

yeah man i fitted a few of these and its all in the ignition wiring

never ever thought about the fuel pump

I wouldnt bother with a turbo timer unless you've really up the boost. Our trucks at work(Aussie post) dont have timers and we've never had an issue with the engines being turned off with out cool down time.
Toymotors run fairly low boost anyway.

Maybe talk to a different guy?? Autobarn sell many different turbo timers that have nothing to do with your fuel pump. I run a Blitz auto timer from Autobarn in the middy and it is, as Tiny said, all to do with ignition wiring. It simply runs power to your "ON" ignition wire until the time runs down (or until the handbrake is released, anti theft setup). Simple as that.

I built mine for $1.50 ( I didn't have a push button switch)

Can built ya one for say $25.00 if ya want. Time/effort/parts/postage.

My old girl (LR 200 tdi), manual fuel pump. The only wire that is needed to the engnie is the fuel cut off solenoid.
The timer just hooks up to your ignition 'on'. Has a one and three minute setting, choose whichever, press the push button to charge the caps, turn off the ignition, take keys out, lock the car (if you have doors) and walk away. Engine keeps going for 1 or 3 minutes. This can easily be changed to being any time value. From 10 seconds to an hour if need be.

Jaycar have kits available for $30, not sure of the quality and reliablity though.

Does anyone have this or know of someone using it, would be interested in hearing opinions.

If you do not want a wanky one with a fancy LCD display go with the BES or Boggard units. The are pre wired for the particular vehicle and as long as you can find the plug under your dash they plug into, an earth point and a 12 volt supply... your there.

15.. 20 minutes and it is in.. no stuffing around. I think I got it on line via one of the Mega stores.. how much I cannot remember but being a tight arse it would not have been that much.

Now the real question is.... do I need it. Having never had a diesel before I thought it was a must. 2 or 3 hours of high speed cruising.. turbo heats up yabba yabba yabba... but what I found... my 3 hours of high speed driving was followed by half an hour of bumper to bumper traffic once I found civilisation and this in its self cooled down the turbo. I used it a bit the other week in my 11 hour run from Queensland as I just pulled straight off highway into fuel stops to fill up.. but for the rest of the 11 months of the year... the red over ride button gets a bashing. ...

when I am off road... gezz I am lucky to reach 30Km/h.

Would I get one in another vehicle... probably not.. would invest it on a good quality pyro guage or oil pressure guage that is used all the time.

Just my opinion.

Picked up a 2nd hand HKS timer today from Asian Spares.. Looks pretty basic.

It has 3 wires that need connecting somewhree in the ignition and then a black which I take is earth and a green which I am thinking maybe handbrake or something. Will search the net for a wiring diagram.
