DA60,
I have a 89' TB4.2 AUTO SWB and a van of 1000 gvm and am not very impressed with it's towing ability.
I just had the torque converter replaced this week and was told that when towing I should have the power button in (restricting the auto to 3 speed) to protect the converter and transmission. I haven't tried this yet and previously have just let the transmission work as required. I also have a remote cooler and temp guage on the tranmission to help reduce heat and tell me how hot it is running.
Having read your response I was hoping you could tell me:
1. how hot your transmission fluid is when towing (if you have a guage)
2. do you have a remote cooler fitted
3. have you had any transmission problems
R0880,
I would also like to add that my father in law has the same vehicle as me except it's a manual and he tows a van of 1840 gvm without any problems what so ever at about 22 ltr/100km on petrol and 26 ltr/100km on gas.
Depending on your budget if you are looking at an older vehicle I would be playing it safe and buying a manual.
