what is the law reguarding mudflaps?

Post by muddymav »

can any one tell me what the law is on not having mud flaps on a gq with a rear quarter chop?.i got pulled up today by the men in blue and they nearly gave me one of those sick yellow stickers that i want so much!(sarcasm) i talked them out of it but they said it was just the mudflaps mainly, i went on vicroads web site today and found this "mud flaps are not normally required on passanger type vehicles that the mud flap does not form part of the wheel guard excluding tray type vehicles, primovers and motor bikes"
could some one please clarify this! thanks :D

Refer to page 16. This is for QLD but I doubt if there is much diference. I've got the same modification as you and was have added mudflaps as described in the attached standard

I believe the adr specifies that the mud flap mys be no higher than 300mm off the ground.

I am waiting to put some on mine due to a rear chop... I've mounted one side but on the driver's side there's nothing I can really mount it to until the rear bar's done.

This is also ambiguous. The first sentence says "Effective mudguards must be fitted for all wheels on ALL vehicles." Yet at the bottom of the same page it says "Mudflaps are not normally required on passenger car type vehicles."

I hear ya.

I phone queensland transport in the end and their interpretation was that if it had mudflaps out of the factory then it still requires them after modification.

This is only correct for box trailers.

Vehicles designed for off road use, the wheel guards must be no less than 300mm from the gound. Most manufactures fit mud flaps to their vehicles because designing wheel guards to meet theis rule would affect the operation of the vehicle.

ADR 42/--, Clause 14.

That would be the best bet. If you dont make them removable, at that cost you wouldnt mind it they got trashed.

Jees thats a bit rude, defecting you for no washer water. Also, there is nothing in the ADR's about the strength of the mudflaps or if they are removable.

I would check with VIC Roads techo guys about this & maybe dispute it.

Sounds like the copper is on a power trip.
