Anyone know what the hell this is?

Post by 87suzi »

I was driving somewhere today, I'm stopped behind traffic, went to drop the clutch and take off quick and I heard a loud high pitched squeal. The squeal continued as I drove, the pitch matching the engine revs. Firstly I thought it was a belt that maybe let go or loosened or something, but then I noticed the noise stopped when I push the clutch pedal.

I had a similar problem on another gearbox I had, it made a terrible sound when the input shaft of the gearbox turned and hence pushing the clutch pedal stopped it. I also just installed a brand new clutch bout a month ago.

Any help would be appreciated.

did you replace the thrust bearing when you replaced the clutch??

Have had two zooks and both had noisy thrust bearings.....

If the sound goes away when clutch depressed this is my guess from this distance.......

Throw out bearing.

Is it still making the noise or was it a one off thing?

my guess is the front gearbox bearing cause mine does the same thing even after replacing the throw out bearing.

Still sounds like a clutch squeel to me. How high did ya rev it b4 dropping the clutch?

okay, reved it to about 4 grand before dropping it. Not very high, but had it under a bit of load at the takeoff point. And it's weird cause it's sounded like something slipped or let go under the heavy load. I put a clutch kit in it, replaced the throwout bearing as well. Would it make sense for it to be a bearing, be it the throwout, or front input shaft bearing if the the noise just started instantly like that? Usually bearings progressively wear.
By the way, yeah it's still doing it.

Maybe dry spigiot bearing (end of input shaft brg in flywheel).
These can squeal under load.

SOunds like mine, was giving it a bit in a boghole and it squeeled bigtime, but only in reverse to start with.

When i hit the highway on the way home, a smaller whine developed that is only obvious in 3rd 4th and 5th gears.

Can get it to whine with transfer in neutral, and in 5 at idle i get a nasty rattle. Possibly unis (small amount of play) or a bearing/s in the gearbox or transfer.

Changed oils, a little bit of metal filings in both cases, noise still there. Im a bit puzzled too.

The problem has gone away and I'll explain what I did if for no other reason than amusement, or to confuse you. I thought to myself, if the problem started by taking off really quickly, I got the idea to take off really quickly in reverse. I did that, did a little chirpie. I heard what sounded like a big clunk, and from then on has gone perfectly.

I am really confused, but I'd rather not ask questions and just have it the way it is and not have to take the gearbox down again.
