Exhaust manifold on a TD42.

Post by DanielS »

thought I would throw this open to the panel,
I have sold my turbo set up an I'm in the process of buying my new roller bearing unit.
My questions are,
1what are the benifits of running extracters between the head and turbo? ( is it only good for higher RPM? does it affect torque)
2 is there anyone running these? and with what results?

You major benefit is you can design a manifold to meet your own needs, the other plus is you can design the manifold to flow cleaner resulting in faster turbo response and since it is made out of steel or in some cases stainless steel it gets rid of heat faster.

I am in the process of building a new manifold too. Should it be long pipes or short, equal length or not? I am mainly after low down torque/faster spool up.

And where do you mount the flange to the turbo, in the middle, between cyl #3 and #4? The stocker has it between cyl#4 and #5 (RD28T)

Thanks for the feed back, I'm looking at how much they cost at the moment. I will keep you informed.

:D It doesn't really matter if the pipes are not equal lenghts. Bigger diesels such as in trucks have log stye manifolds, even though the engine is larger in litres, the turbo is still matched to the engine and they have no problems spooling up early in the revs range.

In saying all that I recently made a manifold out of stainless but only because I could get it cheap. From the exhaust port ive gone three lots of two into one, then three into one which goes to the turbo. Ive try to make the pipes as equal as possiable but room restriction hampered my efforts to a degree. I mounted the turbo between cylinders 3an4 only because it was easier to make the manifold and the turbo was too big to mount lower. It's start spooling up pretty early in revs but doesn't make good power/boost(6-7psi) until 1800rpm max boost 25psi by 2500rpm when hammering it. So running 25psi gives you a wild ride in a 2.5t, high 4wd :D
The whole turbo intercooler setup i am selling. If any body interested drop me a message. Or call me on 0400219767 im in WA

Is that 25psi on a TD42 and what turbo? Any rear wheel power figures :?:

Yes 25 psi plus on late 95 td 42. No power figures as yet. Estimated hp 200 at wheels.
