okay, is there a way i can hook a buzzer up to go off if i leave my lights on when the engine is off/door open

very simple example, will go off whenever the drivers door is opened while the headlights are on, stops when the door is closed again.

Just buy a 12V buzzer from Dick Smith and wire the +12v to a source that's +12v when the headlights are on (eg. dash backlighting) and the other side to your door switch. This will work providing your door switch earths out the interior light- most vehicles are wired this way.
