HJ60 Exhaust Setup

Went around on Thursday after prices for my exhaust. Went to three places around Newcastle.
First place was Newcastle Muffler Service at Gateshead (this place I did not know existed and was recommended by two other mates). They have quoted me for a 2 1/2" pipe with a high flow muffler - $350, fitting 2nd hand extractors is an extra $120 - $140 depending on whether they break any manifold studs.
Second place was Carline at Belmont. They quoted for the same system but with a Lukey Turbo muffler $360 and an extra $140 to fit the headers.
Third was Argy Tyres at Glendale. They quoted to fit the extractors and for a 2 1/2" pipe with sports muffler $340.

By far the best place was Newcastle Muffler Service. The guy I spoke to was extremely helpful and explained everything that was going to be done. Carline was okay to say the least. Argy Tyres had about the average price for the exhaust but had no charge to fit the headers. But I know in this world you get what you pay for. Has anyone in the Newcastle area had there exhaust done at Argy Tyres @ Glendale? I would like to get the job done at Newcastle Muffler Service but for the extra $150 odd to fit the extractors I have either the choice of asking them to match Argy or fitting the extractors myself ( which I have no clue how to do). Any thoughts? Thanks, Joel.

Had another poke around today. Told NMS that Argy offered to fit the headers for free. HE said sorry but couldn't match that. So I will be getting Argy Tyres to fit the etractors and exhaust probably next week for $350. What prices have others paid for the same setup.

My extractors cost $150 to be fitted. Didn't get the exhaust done though.

Was quoted $250 for new muffler and 2.5in tail pipe... Already have extractors and 2.5in pipe from extractors to muffler. A little pricey i thought, especially when you getting a whole system for $350...

I paid $5,000 for my extractors and full system, although the guy did throw in a complete HJ60 with it for nothing. :P :D

let me get this straight - looking at $500ish PLUS the cost of second hand extractors ($100??) to get it all fitted up?

I need to start charging more for custom turbo setups :roll:

suggest you grab yourself a $20 set of spanners and get cracking on removing the existing exhaust fitting the extractors yourself. it's not hard and almost impossible to get wrong. give all the studs a good soaking in WD40 for a couple of hours before you start, and it should all more or less fall apart in your hands.

once the extractors are on you can drive it (it will be LOUD) and it should be $200ish to get an exhaust shop to fit up a pipe and appropriate muffler.

Funny you said that. I have an extremely novice question. I have the know how to get the manifold etc.. off, but how do I pull the pipe out? I Imagine it joins/ is bolted somewhere after they run off the block (i.e Is it one continuous pipe or is it several?) Understand?

the engine pipe bolts to the exhaust manifold and also bolts to the rest of the exhaust system. Its about 1.5m long. Undo both the flanges and lift it out

suggest you soak all nuts with WD40 for about 1hr before you try to take em off.

I got mine done a couple of years ago (in Brisbane mine you) paid $610 for the hole job, new headers (don't know the brand but they are blue) and a 2 1/2 inch system that was mandrel bent. makes sooo much difference!! i was struggling up hills on the highway at around 80k b4 the new system got installed, now no dramas at all!! I did it just b4 heading down to Sydney, you know all those hills b4 you get in to Sydney? every one of them at 110k:) i do have the 4spd though.. will probablly be saying i had the 4speed HJ60 soon!! its going for sale soon.. now i have my 80:)

Changed my rocker cover gasket today and while doing so dounced all the exhaust manifold studs with wd 40. Will ask some mates if they know what there doing to help me, if not I'll by a slab then see how many mates I got then :cool: Looks as tho the truely poxy Manifold which is real short is in two pieces which connect and run straight into the pipe connected by a three sided joint.

My quesiotn is I undo the roughly 12? manifold bolts then undo the 3 boles on the joint to remove the manifold. What next?

yep that's it! then, assuming your exhaust is bone stock, there will be a flange joint (2 bolts) under the passenger floor somewhere, and a bracket that holds the pipe to the bell housing. undo them all, possibly a bracket to the body as well, and the engine pipe will come out.

Righto soaked all bolts/studs with WD40 2 days leading up to it. Attempted to remove the exhaust manifold/exhaust and fit my 2nd hand extractors. Only snapped one stud. She's pretty loud but. It is booked in tomorrow to have the 2 1/2 inch pipe with a sports/turbo muffler fitted for $340. Can't wait.

What are the metal plates (two of) bolted on the the exhaust manifold for?

heat shields. they probably won't fit on your extractors.

did you replace the broken stud? if you left it out, the manifold will warp, and it will start leaking pretty quick.

Are the heat shields necessary? What is their purpose? I screwed it back in to an extent ( the stud) . The car has not and will not be driven until tomorrow anyway when it goes in.

Fitted, driven, vroooooooom. Revs alot freer now, has a lot more get up and go if that is possible. Sounds great!
