Rockhoppers or dual t-case?
I am looking at fitting a set of Rockhopper gears for a Vitara and wondered if anybody has had any experiences, good or bad or do I consider dual transfer cases?
rockhopper. In the long run it will be easier, cheaper and more reliable. In a swb vitara it will be even more problems. We have a couple of dual transfer case Sierras in the club and the mucking around and reliability issues really don't outweigh the ease of a rockhopper

go the rockhoppers there better and you have big reliliabity problems with the second transfer case

rock hopper gears are easy to install easy to use less to worry about want more go a klune if ya got money to burn , speaking of which does anyone know if anyone is using the klune reduction set up here ?
PS i think what hardcore meant was there more reliable (rockhopper gears ) and less maintance.

I had rockhopper gearing fitted to my vitara & it was by far the best mod i ever did. Better value for money than lockers. Mind you the only downside was that flat out in 5th gear low range was about 50kms with 31" tyres. You also had to change from low to high range a lot more than normal.

i'd doubt it as they only made a couple of them and then stopped making them for the suzukis due to lack of interest. Alot of money to invest especially now that there are 6:1 gears and the trail tough rock block etc

Dual T/cases are a possability without moving the rear diff back,
Reliable dual cases that do not move the rear axle are another matter IMHO.. The stress on the output of the first case's bearing as well as the input of the second case;s bearings if there were even minor amounts of misallignment (which if you run duals you are likely to be a crawler therefore flexing alot, twisting chassis up a bit etc)
Unless there is a spud shaft of some type that allows for this missalignment you will most likely eat bearings like popcorn ..

I am looking at using this in conjunction with an auto and front and rear lockers.I figure the extra low range will help with descents and also if I am running slower I will be less likely to destroy the weak front end in the Vitara by having to use momentum and having wheelspin occur. I was also looking at changing to Warn hubs with hub fuses. I figure this may help keep the front end alive a little longer and if it breaks I will look at putting in a steel third member and axle housing from a Grand Vitara or XL-7.

How many people who voted rockhoppers have their rockhopper ian a Sierra and not a Vitara, and thus got benefit for both high and low range???????
Not saying dual transfer case is the go, but if you're basing your opinions on people whose choice was for a different vehicle, then you're not being correctly informed.
I'm still stuck since there is nothing on the market that is sutiable for my SWB Vitara's needs at present.
The closest application I can find to fit me is Calmini 5.83 R&P gears, but they are still too high in low, although it is a 13% reduction in both High and Low. A rockhopper makes no difference to high..... so is practically useless to me, and a sierra transfercase is too low in high.
The only sensible mod I can see is a complete package of Solid Axle Swap front (Probably Hilux 4.8 gearing), Sierra Transfer Cases, more suspension lift and 33"s. That's hardly a mod you would consider lightly, especially with the engineering laws in this state. I would seriously have to consider another vehicle (not for the first time) instead of such a change.
Make sure you know what impact you are really looking for before you buy something recommended, particularly by someone who will be using a different kit on a different vehicle altogether.

Yeah by converting to 32" muddies and Hilux axles.... strange how that's really close to what I suggesting....... (33" muddeis and Hilux axles)
Seriously though - competition vehicles dont need to be very streetable.... mine does.

Dunno about whether it's worth the headahces. For a bad driver no, for a good driver extra options are worth a lot more........
As you said - having the hoppper option in either or both the cases opens a whole new world of crawl options......
