I took the 60 to the local air con place as last summer it stopped working. $990 to replace the leaking compressor . Apparently the compressor on it's owns costs $600. Anybody had this done before? Anybody know if the compressor can be rebuilt? I didn't ask as I was in shock at the price.

I can get a compressor from a wrecker for $150 with a 6 month warranty. The system is running the new type of gas, but I'm guessing that is to do with the compressor itself. If the new compressor is $600, why does it cost $390 to install? I don't think the compressor that I have is very old. I recall the previous owner telling me that he had it redone and that's why it has the new style gas.

gas, drier and vacuum/charging is about $200, if the compressor takes 2 hours to install (unlikely, but possible) then 2 hours @$95/hour takes care of the rest. a lot of shops are charging rates aroun d the $100/hr mark these days.Sixty's Guy wrote:I can get a compressor from a wrecker for $150 with a 6 month warranty.
