change gearing after bigger wheels
i am informed that i will need to change my gearing or something if i increase my wheel size
i have like 26" on atm and going to get 30's
Now this bloke said it would cost about $1,200 for the gears
so $1,200 for gears + $1,000 (give or take) for new wheels
$2,200 fuck that im broke
so is this true or what, thanks

You can run standard gearing on 30"s, shouldnt be much loss in power, most notibly when driving up hills on the freeway , you`ll be kicking it back a gear or two. Depends what zook youre starting with, if its a narrow track with 3.9/1 or widetrack 3.73/1 or coily 3.9/1. Best wait untill you got 31"s or 33"s b4 I`d change the trasfer, then Id get a series 1 rockhopper. Over 33"s Id get series 3. Or dont even change the transfercase and change the diff ratios to 4.3/1 or 4.6/1. Depends what sort of 4wding you want to do. But only do it if the budget allows.
If your zook is getting where you want to go, don't change anything.
If you need to make changes, do them one at a time, try them in the bush, live with them and then you will know what you need, instead of trying to fix a problem you may not have.
I ran 30's for a long time with a 1.0litre motor and LWB. It was a bit gutless, but got nearly everywhere the rest went.
When I put a 1.3 in, the 30s were fine.
But after going 31's I did need a gearing improvement.

I have a 84 sierra 1lt with extractors. i have got 32's on it and have no problem at all. i would like to change the gearing just to get a better crawling effect but just cant afford them.
So i am sure for now you wont see much problem with having 30's on there.
It might just be a bit slower at take off at the lights but in low range you probably wont even notice it.
Cheers

Hookers are like bowling balls, You pick them up, put your fingers in them, then throw them in the gutter and they come back for more.
If you still have 1.0 diffs, you can get diff gears of 4:6 and 4:9 from LJ's to fit fairly easily.84ZOOKSTA wrote:I have a 84 sierra 1lt with extractors. i have got 32's on it and have no problem at all. i would like to change the gearing just to get a better crawling effect but just cant afford them.

Maybe in deep sand or with 35's on. Just go for them. u can always go the chaeep and get a 1ltr case. I run this with 31s and is fine. I ran the 31's with stock gears for a while, was ok.

I went from 26 to 30 with my Vit. Acceleration has dropped off heaps but effieciency is great. I'm just going to put up with itm, as it is only the fisrt few seconds that are effected, once you rev out first and hit 2nd the Vit will be moving. Also don't forget, if ya haven't changed ya speedo gear you are going faster that the speedo!
LTDHO is my Ford 361rwkw (not for off road)
Suzi Vitara is my new hobby. 30's only and now 30mm higher, awaiting TURBO :D

I have 31-32 mongrels on standard NT everything, u gota do a bit more clutch burn on take of but just take it easy, u go a whole gear lower everywhere compared to my old 29" tyres and u have a higher top speed etc.
This would be the max size i rekon before u would be going to fast in low 4wd and get to much clutch dmg on take off. Y not go for a drive in someone suzuki to see the difference? But offroad its tons awesomeer!!
Also my speedo hasnt worked for a year but im certainly not breaking any speed limits..

hey i run 30 inch tyres on my zook(86 1.3l). the diference was hardly noticed onroad. off road in low first i stalled it more often at first but now i can drive it fairly slow without stalling. but i picked up a 1l tcase a few weeks ago and im puting it in soon... get the tyres and keep an eye out for a 1l tcase. you dont NEED the lower gears but they do help....
U musta have a some big 215's as my 225s felt like 205's. no difference. 31's made a difference.
Go the 30's and then see if u need to change anything.
cheers

yeh dunno... the Goodyear 215's i ran on the rear were larger than the Cooper 215's i had on the front.... but there was a MASSIVE difference between the cooper's when i got the 4 of them on new compared to the 205's... i forget actual measurements though.
The worst thing about censorship is ███████.
I would just get a 6.5 : 1 or similar T case set of gears. Cheaper in the long run, and will reduce hi range by around 22%.
I had Richmond gears from Calmini until a few days ago, but they started shedding teeth. So I went back to Suzuki gears, 3.909. Now I am facing a similar problem. I already have a GRS2, but hi range still suffers in fifth.
I won't go back to American R&P's though, only Suzuki for me now. I need to find some Vitara diffs in a mid 4 ratio now. I had 5.43's, but alas, no more.
