OK - in the process of doing the clutch and removed the rear tail shaft. In the process sheared of the mounting bolts for the centre bearing on the rear tailshaft. Happy Days!! :lol:

So instead of having to stuff around trying to remove bolts and re tap holes, think of puitting in a one piece rear TS. I have seen a few luxes with them - what is the beneift?

Any opinions on this - i have searched and found threads on 1 piece jobs with double cardins. Are these the go?? and do any 1 piece TS fit straight from another vehicle? What is involved and what are the benefits?

Is it worth doing or just remove and re tap? There was nothing wrong with the original 2 piece so to speak.

i think the one peice shafts come outa surfs or something, anyways im no expert on that.. but i would try ezy-outs on the bolt, of that doesnt work rather than re tapping the same hole u could drill a new hole just to the side and put a nut and bolt though it... anyways wat ever u do have fun..

Similar thing on mine, busted the captive nut off in the cross member. ended up making a plate on a wire and threaded it inside the chassis.

Will be doing a one piece unit when i have coils, just didn't want to do the shafts twice.

I have a one piece shaft in my lux.

Benefits are

Slightly!!!!!!!!!! smaller angles on the unis and less of them to have to check and replace.
No centre bearing to wear out
The drive feels so much more direct
No vibs at all when taking off. Once you have changed to a one piece you notice that even a brand new centre bearing mores around lots when taking off.

Disadvange is you loose a little bit of clearance from the ground to the shaft.

I have 2 rear shafts one with a double cardinal and one without. In my lux there is no differance between the 2. Some people can get away without the cardinal and some can`t. Since I have the 2 different rear shafts I have a front out put flange on the rear out put which has 2 different bolt patterns drilled in it as the 2 different shafts have different bolt patterns.

Also as far as I know no shaft from another model will fit in. The only one that does is a rear shaft from a coily 4 runner, if you have added a 2nd t case.

A one piece shaft from a 4 speed Hilux will fit onto a hilux running IFS rears..

If you aren`t going to run a cd then just extend the rear section of the standard rear shaft.
If you are wanting to run a cd then just get a hilux front shaft extended as they have a cd in them standard.

If doing this it is also a good time to get a bigger tube with a thicker side wall put in. With what I have in mine I have a few times walked the rear of the lux sideways on the shaft as it was spinning on a rock.

Yeah you have to swap the flanges on your current shaft to the new. no biggy though 10 minutes work..

easy thing to do, just need to have them when you do the conversion.

do you change the flanges on the tail shaft?
are they bolted on ?
sorry i dont quite understand, but i am chasing a one piece shaft to as i am sick of replacing bloody centre bearings. :x

yes you change the flanges on teh tailshaft just a matter of swapping them over when you throw on your new uni's
