Few questions about Tdi Disco's.

I bought a 97 disco tdi auto yesterday and i was just wondering if anybody could tell me how much heavier is the tdi is compared to the 3.9 V8 in the rangie? Secondly i'll be using the vehicle for a lot of remote travel can someone maybe recomend some spare parts to carry? ill have all the usual stuff like hoses and belts, should i carry a spare pickup pump for example? Thirdly i'd appreciate any comments in regards to general maintance outside of oil changes. Thanks in advance

brass plug for the radiator)plastic ones blow out under stress)
spare suspension bushes,washers and nuts.
i have seen a few guys that carry complete spare front and rear (one of each) shocks with all bushes bolted under the sills on brackets bolted or welded to the chassis.
change fuel filter to cheaply available z9(?) with sediment bowl. carry spares
just a few off the top of my head.

Get everything checked out at that age. All suspension bushings, all seals, bearings, brakes, motor mounts, exhaust....

Make sure the timing belt has been changed at appropriate intervals.

Check the wear on the output of the gearbox. Usually OK on autos, but you don't need it going in the bush.

Your probably best off getting aftermarket shocks. From discussions with frequent outback travellers, Konis seems to be the most reliable. Get durable tyres.

Get a workshop manual. Carry a hub nut wrench and circlip pliers for working on the axles.

You must add a proper front recovery point. If you have a hitch in the rear, that will work OK,

I would convert bearing to oil bath and upgrade hub seal. If you are going to do any strenuous off roading, then upgraded halfshafts and CV joint would bring peace of mind. If not, stock is OK.

Thanks for the info. it already has twin maxi drives king spring's , koni shocks, snorkel BFG's and all the little goody's that i've brought across from the rangie but i was after spares regarding the tdi engine itself. I carry most gear as far as driveline goes eg. shocks,bearings,mounts,UJ's,filters. It's just that i used to carry a lot of spares for the V8 enigne like rotor,pickup,amplifier,leads,plugs and so on, and with the tdi all i have is hoses and belts.

Well, as far as the tdi goes, providing you look after it with oil changes etc, there isn't too much that is likely to go wrong enough not to keep driving it, aside from the belts and hoses..... They're a pretty simple motor, being diesel with no electronic controls on injection or turbo.
84 Rangie, 3 inch spring lift, 2 inch body, Megasquirted 4.6, R380, rear Maxi, 34x11.5 JT2s. Simex FM installed.

drill the rivets out on the vac pump and replace them with 3/16 stainless bolts and nylocs before the rivets let go and i carry a cheap electric pump incase the lift pump dies but it hasent happened yet and also check to see if your timing belt has been done ther was a fault with the gears that is usually rectified by lr at the schedualled timing belt change. Other than that there is not much that goes wrong with them

Disco kerb weights: (EEC kerb weight: unladen + full fuel tank + 75kg driver)

5 door Tdi 2100 kg
5 door V8 2025 kg

So to answer the first part the Tdi engine is about 75 kg heavier than the V8 motor
95 3dr 300Tdi Disco,

white, snorkelled, lifted and dash curled.
