Just a quick one , at what height do you think 4wd is too high , is there a basic rule of thumb regarding a vehicle like a cruiser or a patrol when you say , hmmmm too high.
reason why i am asking is ive sprung over my 60 series cruiser and got 37's under it and i dont think i want it that high it looks too tippy ,
it is almost exactly 2000mm to the roof gutter ,
what are some of your vehicle heights to to see where im at cause if its roughly the norm on a lifted vehicle i wont worry about it to much .
i think its more than just height of the roof, width will play an important roll in how tippy your junk is... maybe its time for some wheel spacers or some cut and flipped sunnies

This thread is all ready a big suprise , Slunnies disco at 2.1 , and your HJ , Rock Hopper at that height , im starting to relax a bit all ready.

Probably when you cannot fit into any carpark that is, for some stupid reason, placing chunks of steel I beams on entries with hanging chains stating 2.X Max height!..... Current trend in carparks around my way is 2.1 metres!! DOH!!
I forgot i had the rack on till i went to exit a carpark with one of those steel bars on chain hanging down with 2.1m on it - scared the crap out of me !

My 4Runner's (2nd Gen) roof is pretty low, but that's because they are more like a station wagon than a truck. With 3" spring, 2" body and 33's it'd be lucky to be 1.9M.... But plenty of clearance still.
It's funny to have so much done to it, yet a standard Prado or Paj has a higher roof. Higher roof, and much closer to the ground at the same time...
Dunno what height exactly but my 90 Hilux dual cab with 35's and 6 inch suspension lift (no BL)- roof is a fraction higher than standard Paj and lower than Defender. Just about anything is lower than those Landies!
my lux is 1840mm to the roof, 1840mm from outside of tyre to outside of tyre, its stable as fark. Theres been a few times when it felt like it was going over but it held. Im only running 33"s though.
Try to think of it with geometry, a square is going to be more stable than a rectangle with the shortest side at the bottom and top, whereas a rectangle with the the longest side at the bottom and the top is going to be more stable than a square, does that make sense? (see paint pic below)
Stay as low as you possibly can thats what i live by.
*Edit - Look at the other pic, the larger that angle the better, but of course there are other variables like weight distribution.

not that i believe this or that it is scientific methodology how about:
door sill inline with the top of the rims.. anything more and you're not cutting the guards enough

If you're talking stability, i've heard plenty of times "for every inch you gain in height, add 2 inches to the track(width)"
Doesn't surprise me. Drop bears angle chart is a great guide, but because the axles, tyres, engine, gearbox, transfer, perhaps the chassis etc is so much weight and down so low in comparison to the roof and glass, the CofG comes down low. If seen Rangies so far over, to look at it was just an impossibility.
The other question, is when does it become unstable. Is 45 degrees usable angle stable and 40 degrees tippy? There's no real definition I wouldn't have thought. I've read people articles stating that 3" lift is stable, but 4" is too tippy. Go figure hey.

The degree of tippy to unstable will depend on how high the CoG is in relation to the outside of the tyre track, and also how far back the CoG is in side view due to the compound angles that are generated. General guide is that the CoG usually sits at around gearknob.
Stable is when the CoG can be constrained within the limits of the width of your track and wheelbase. Tippy is when the CoG can be placed outside the track on one wheel only (crossed up). As soon as the CoG can fall over two wheels you are on your side or arse over...

My Jeep is just over 1.8m tall to the top of the roof but that is with a 4" lift and 31's compared to 28's as standard (so a total lift of 5.5"). The bonnet is higher than a stock 100 Series Cruiser, the sills are a lot higher in the Jeep but the roof is still lower. The Cherokee has a very slim body so you can get some decent clearance and still fit it in the garage or the local shopping centre and not get so high it gets tippy.
my shorty is 2.2m high now,(new suspension), no spring over& 33"x12.5" tyres on 10" rims. the springs under it are pretty rigid & haven't had a problem with body roll
it's never a problem until it can't be fixed, even then it' only a minor set back
My 88 Hilux has a 2Inch BL, 3 Inch Sagged Suspension, 32's and a rollbar.
top of the rollbar sits at 2.2metres. smacked into a few of those clearance bars that claim to be 2.25 or 2.3 or the such.... eh, i am yet to come off second best

My shorty was just over 2m (like 2.05) and that was spring over and 38" TSLs And with the wider tyres, the flipped 15x8 rims and the 60 series diffs it was approx 10"-12" wider than a stock 40
