Changing over leaf springs...

Post by vanzbrown »

Ok, i have seriously been searching for like an hour...

I have a set of second hand (2inch lifted, same as wats already on)springs which i want to swap over in the rear, as my current ones are a bit sagged (the rear of my cruiser sits 20mm lower than the front)

Also want to fit the shackles that came with em, which are about 1inch longer than the OME greasable anti inversion ones i have. Any drama putting these on instead? Will it give the rear and extra 0.5in in ride height.

Can i pull the greasable pins out of my current ones and put them into these slightly extended shackles.

Any tricks to taking out a leaf spring and swapping it over. Do i need to take the shocks out at all?

Got a fair idea what im doing, but just wondering if anyone else has made mistakes that i can learn from before i make them myself...

Cheers!

Get the rear of the chassis up on some stands. Then remove the leaves and swap in the new ones. Dont worry about the shocks unless you need to.

And its done, to easy

THought it wouldnt be too bad...

Cant wait to get into it... hopefully it will make the back sit up nicely.

The Rear Drivers side spring at the moment is about 3/4in lower than the rear passenger side... Cant believe i have noticed it before.

Thanks

I was talking to a bloke who did a coil conversion to his 60, and he said if i wanted the old springs and extended shackles i could come pick em up for $50. Had em lying around here for ages, and finally got a weekend free. So about to go start the job now.

Let you know how i go...

Ok, took me half a day to swap over the rear springs. Bought some new bushes to do the job too, for $20. It was a real easy job.

Initially sat 2inches higher each side, but after a drive have settled to 1inch higher each side than before. Interesting that the drivers side is still about 15mm lower than the other side. Not too worried. Springs do feel a little stiffer, but going out today to flex it up to see if they will soften a little.

Heres a pic from the day, this side had the spring out at this stage just sitting on the carstand...
