How happy are you with your 4.6!
As the subject mentions.
Just wanting to find out what people thought after they have done a 4.6 engine conversion into there early model range rovers?
Are you happy?, Price for power?, Heaps better power for offroad stuff?, Hows ya fuel economy?, If you run the old four speed manual with it how does that feel? Does it have heaps of torque?
Any extra info you can give about your feelings with the motor would be greatly appreciated?

With a question like that you must have plenty of $$$ setting fire to your pocket. Must have sold that pretend tojo of yours.
A second hand 4.6 engine bolt in will probably set you back about 5 - 7K. If you go for a fully rebuilt engine then you are looking at around 10 - 12K after you get hit up for new radiator, hoses, belts and all the other stuff that it is wise to change at the time.
As for the 4.6 yes I was more than happy with it in my last rangie. Fuel economy was something I achieved when I didn't drive it - 4 - 5 km per litre was normal.
If you want real go then Kurmit is selling his stroked 5.2.

Ahahaha na aint got heaps of cash but destroyed the 3.5 and now i have to think about what to do next! Its all getting a bit hard might have to just get rid of the thing! Would have to talk to the banks for about half the amount for the conversion so im just trying to think about every possibility. Yer i know im being a bit drastic! Its hard not to let yourself get worked up and easily confused with all these figures and options flying around. Just wanting to know weather i can justify spending that sort of coin? Cos knowing my luck buying a second hand motor i will not get the reliability out of it that im after.
If you're happy to do the work yourself and to look for a good price given the Aut$ you can get away with it for approx 5k (new 4.6 short motor and other parts). I installed a 4.6 short motor using old heads and carbies. Fuel use still high but better than old motor. Very happy with low down torque but nothing up high. I am now in the process of installing EFI. Almost as expensive as the short motor.

Dont go do anything stupid now after all that you have been through with the Rangie...
pull the donk out (4 hrs MAX with a mate)
pull he heads off (1/2 hr MAX with rattle gun)
take a look what is going on...
New bearings, rings and cam will set you back about $600 absolute max retail price... much cheaper if you shop around e-bay etc.. new pistons (if you need em) another $300-$400 again shop around
Provided everything else is still good... bolt it all back together and she will be as good as new...for a little extra power put an efi setup on it with megasquirt and some nice extractors...
Then theres gearing :cough: toyota :cough: - which is pretty cheap if you don't upgrade the cv's to start with.. and with 4.5's or 4.8's you will be pretty happy i reckon for a far smaller investment than a 4.6 in what is otherwise a beautiful car

I have a 4.6 project iv'e been doing slowly , got the short motor, just bought an Autronics computor , CDI unit & 8 ignition coils.
I was under the impression that 4.6 was more economical than the 3.5 , due to the extra grunt , less throttle position? less fuel burn? I know bigger injectors & stuff bigger squirt of fuel.
Please tell me I havent lead my self up the creek, in my research ,
or lack of

Graeme Cooper reckons that most people get better economy because compared to a 3.9 , you are in the rich part of the fuel curve less going up hills etc. Of course he sells 4.6s
BUT if you use the power you will use heaps.
Guy in my club has a 5.0 built by Bruce Davis for towing and he reckons equal economy to his 3.9 on the run from Newcastle to Sydney.
I think on a hilly road where you try to maintain speed with a 3.9 you may use the same or a tiny bit less with a 4.6 ,particularly where a 3.9 kicks down to keep speed but on flat cruise you would use more.
The less the throttle is open the more the pumping losses. That is why the new Chrysler hemi goes back to 4 cylinders on cruise.
Of course you can run higher gearing eg through bigger tyres so that may help.
But your dreaming if you think a 4.6 will give you better economy than a 3.9 in any meaningful way and if you use your new found power you will use more.
