Old Lady has the shakes

Post by Funk_off »

Hey Peoples, Got a 1978 fj45. Have noticed in the past few months that when it's hauling a large load on an incline, reversing up an incline or on a long trip I stop and as I take of again the truck shudders and shakes. I have done some research around and have found that it is most likely the clutch on the way out, but have also heard it could be caused by loose engine mounts.

Has anyone had or heard of this problem and if so can you give me some info on it. Its really starting to annoy me.

One way to check engine mounts that can require two people - wind hand throttle up to give high idle, hold foot on brake and let clutch almost all the way out quickly (sort of jerking motion) and push back in. This will load up the drive train, and as the wheels can't turn, if something else is loose it will move if it can. Either look at the gearstick for movement while doing this, or have sopeone looking under the bonnet while you dump the clutch - the engine will rotate to one side a bit.

But, shudders are commonly clutch on the way out. If nothing moves prob the clutch.
