Landcruiser braking dramas

The rear brakes one of my Landcruisers were'nt working so after replacing the 2 slaves and shoes, adjusting them up, bleeding the whole system and bypassing the load level sensor they now work but the pedal is still soft and drops too far. Has anyone had issues with the master cylinder leaking internally between F & R? or any other suggestions?

I'm guessing there is still air in the system. Internal leaks should still produce a hard pedal.

Are the brake shoes well adjusted? A poorly adjusted brake can also result in a soft pedal as it takes several pumps on the brake to get the shoes to approach the drum.

Mick,

I can only agree with dave. I had a similar issue with my middy and I replaced the slave cylinder in the rear right hand side (was leaking). I bled the whole system and still had a soft pedal. I then adjusted the rear brake shoes tighter and again bled both front and rear and it brought my pedal up to an acceptable level, and i was happy even running 35's. Dunno if that helps, but that's what I did.

stupid question: are the drums within tolerance? if they are oversize it's almost impossible to get good pedal as you don't get enough contact between drum and shoe.

Yeah, drums are just within and shoes are adjusted right up. I'll give it another bleed (3rd time lucky). Thanks guys

Also check that your hoses arent bloating when you push the pedal down.

I doubt it will be your master.

Lastly, what method are you using for bleeding?

Mick, whats the goign rate at your shed for a pair of drums for my 40 with lotsa life in them. im getting nothing from my rear brakes at the moment.

I had a similar issue with my old series 3 rover. Try clamping the soft lines to the front and rear brakes. And then do them independently to each other. That should tell you whether or not the master cylinder or rear or front brakes are stuffed.

push the pedal a couple of times quickly if its gets hard then there is air in lines or brakes arnt adjusted. if it doesnt get hard then its a soft line expanding or a master cylinder
