Ive just got the standard carbie on a 1.3L and am having idle problems with it. Ive searched and found many things it could be however I think its possibly dirt in the idle jet. ive just had the idle solenoid cleaned and have used nulon carb cleaner and the problem is better but it still stalls sometimes and usually runs rough at idle. It will usually idle fine when its cold however which has got me a bit stumped. Do you think its the idle jet being a bit blocked or something else? Also where is the idle jet and how do i get it out to clean it? oh btw...the problem only arrived after driving through bit of mud. cheers

it started after jims jump up when u stalled half way up because you couldnt do that cross track thing. thats when i first noticed it.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

i took mine out the other day
not an easy job as its a pain in the arse.

when looking at the carbie from the front of the vehicle, you can see the idle up gear, just under that is two 12mm bolts and you can just see the heads of the bolts under neath it. take these out(most likely have to take the whole carb off) and then you need a flat head screwdriver to unscrew the jets, they are gold in colour, dont loose them and make sure you put em back in the right way, better option is not to take them out and just spray through them with compressed air.

If your going to fix any problem on the std carb it is best to pull it right apart and clean everything, this way u will find the problem. The problem you are eexperiecing is most likely due to a blocked primary emulsion tube, it has many needle like holes in it which can easily block up.

I had the same problem with my zuk just after i bought it. I took it to a carb repair joint because I thought it would be worthwhile to get it all checked out. After a few hours the guys rang me up and said it was only dirt inside the carbie causing the problem. He also said the settings had been played around with so he adjusted them back to the way it should have been. Its all good now until recently when i find when driving on the hwy for a while i start to lose power and begins to splatter. If i pull over it ldles really low then with a few presses on the pedal she is back to normal and working fine......Im yet to know the problem

it was already losing power low in the revs at this point...thats why i couldnt do jims jump up coz it didnt have enough balls. ended up just keeping the revs high at possible. not sure if this was just the carb struggling with the angle or the start of the problem though? wat u reckon?

As for these primary emulsion tubes...where are they and is there as easy way to clean them? could this be related to a vaccuum leak?...should i be looking for something like this to? cheers

edit:got it, but only got one as my camera battery ran out, can get more for you later :oops:

first, take off the air cover
then you can see 4x 12mm bolts that holds the carbi on, remove these, but make sure you have drained your coolant otherwise it will leak into your intake :?

remove other necessary lines and pipes so you can take the carbi completely out, next..walk over to bin and throw it in...heh nah just kidding

see the screws just right of my thumb. you have to remove all this vacuum gear(its for the idle up stuff) then just under my thumb is the 12mm bolt that you have to remove to get at the jets.

thanks spike_sierra! thats exactly wat i was after!! just one question though..are the jets being the two bolts in the second pic or are they where you are pointing in the last pic? and do you HAVE to take the vacuum hoses for the idle gear off? y is this important? cheers! much appreciated!

the jets can be seen if you take the bolts out in the 2nd pic, the third pic is showing where the bolts are to take the carbi off the manifold.

take the ones out in the second pic and you will see the jets, they are gold in colour, need a good flat screwdriver to get them out.

you need to take the vacuum gear off so you can get to the bolts.

Just a FYI, the jets behind those 2 bolts are the primary and secondary jets, not the idle jet.

If you do take the primary and secondary jets out don't mix them up as they are slightly different sizes. Sizes should be stamped on them but it's easy to forget which one goes where.

thanks for pointing that out damo and thanks for the pics spike! I'm pretty sure its just the idle jet that is dirty/partially blocked as it runs fine after about 1300rpm when i presume the primarys kick in properly? i shall have a look! thanks again. Nev

YEs thats the primary jet/venturi. When you undo those 2 screws the lot will pull out and the emulsion tube will be exposed (long brass tube with many small pin holes) Make sure theere is nothing at all on this, not even the slightest bit and check the gaskets for it. If they look rough they probabily will be loosing there fibers and they clog up the lot. Found the ole cornflake box is the best for making new gaskets :)

it may be as simple as to blow thru the fuel cut off solenoid opening with a burst of air
unscrew the solenoid.its the small thumb size thing with the wires coming out of,cheers toddy

Sounds like the idle jet.

My fuel filter gave out and let mud-like fuel through the carby. Temporarily blocked the main jet and then it blocked the idle which didn't manage to unblock itself.

Would stall instantly as soon as you had it at idle.

Had to rebuild the carby and now theres something seriously wrong with it. I've even had a good mechanic come out twice and whenever something is fixed it creates new problems.

Don't screw something up or there'll be problems.

Thanks for the advice guys. The fuel cut off solenoid got completely cleaned but still having same problem so pretty sure its the idle jet. I still havent got it fixed yet but have turned the idle up as a temporary fix so it can be driven without being too annoying. I tried taking the top of the carbie as others showed me but still couldn't find how to access the idle jet even enough to blow some air through it? What is the best way to get to it? cheers

ye carbies suck!!!
do what i did,get a single point injected throttle body from early vitara or import escudo,the whole inlet manifold bolts straight on.a little computer wiring needed,then its smooth acceleration and instant

I had this problem a while ago. Zook wouldnt idle properly (if at all) under two thousand rpm. At the start it was an intermittent problem then in the end it was there all the time.
I had tried fixing the problem myself but didnt seem to be getting anywhere. I took it to my mechanic and told him about the problem. When i picked it up he said that the jets in the carby were nqr. So he adjusted all the settings and mixtures.
Picked the car up and it seemed to run ok for the first couple of days, then the problem started again.
When I go out bush i didnt want it playing up and leaving me with a carbie problem far from home.
So as much as i didnt want to fork out the $$$ i thought i may aswell take it to the carby specialist in my area. Theyve been in the business 30+ years. I got them to give me a quote which ended up being between $500 - $700. :shock:
Told them to go ahead with it and they said come back in a week.

Work done - Clean components and chemical bath and bead blast. Machine parting faces. Machine base and fit throttle shaft bushes.
Line-bore bushes and re-fit throttle shaft. Fit new primary throttle plate and re-fit secondary plate. Bed in both plates and fit new retaining screws. Fit new accelerator pump plunger, gaskets, seals, check balls and retaining clips. Setup float level and clearences on bench. Pressure test and wet check float level.
Run engine to operating temperature and run on tune scope and emission analyser, check idle and fuel mixtures.

Interestingly in the report they made mention that the fuel mixture was way to lean. (adjusted by another workshop) :roll:

Sorry about the long post. Just that by letting you know after much stuffing around by myself i could not succesfully get the carby operating as it should. My thoughts are that it was well worth paying the workshop the money to get it right! Now when i take the zook out i know the carby is going to be ok, so if it stops running theres 99% chance its not going to be that.
