Coil rates
I'm setting up my long wheelbase zook for coils in the rear. Any ideas on what coils would work well in there? I'm looking for something out of another vehicle for a start, and hopefully they will be pretty close to the mark (eg, being hard enough to give decent handling but soft enough to give good flex). They will be mounted inside of the chassis rails.
If what I end up isn't close enough to what I want i'll get a custom pair wound.

Range Rover coils are good. Easy to get 130lb/in, 170lb/in and then into the aftermarket stuff like 220+lb/in and bigger. Can also get progressive ones from discos and mega big stuff from defender 130s. They all have the same mounting setup.
Depending on how close the coils are I would start with the 130s and work your way up. I would think that these would work well retained top and bottom. This is what is in the rear of POSs rig.

Hey Damo
Y not give kings a ring and get the same rate as they run in there litfed coil zook range . Ive got a mate that had a numba of custom 4" lift springs made by kings he also ran a set of custom 8" lift coils 2 b able to go separate shock in the front as with the coily its almost a strut setup and where the coil perch sits is roughly 4" above the axle do away with this and u need atleast 8'' lift front coils this bloke as with myself went through METROCHECK AUTOMOTIVE AT THORNTON NEWCASTLE ASK 4 DEANO THERE NO IS IN THE BACK OF 4WD MONTHLY IF U WISH TO GIVE HIM A RING ( I MENTION THIS BECAUSE I WENT TO ANOTHER DISTRIBUTOR OF KINGS AND THEY RANG THEM AND THE MOST THEY COULD GET WERE 2" YET DEANO CAN GET WAT EVA HE LIKES NOT SURE IF HE HAS A CONTACT IF THIS FAILS TRY allsprings they did azzopardis springs in his first incarnation aswell as his last mad setup im pretty sure ,
these places may b able to help!
My 2c worth cheers Dan

I didn't think the rover ones would be so soft! I was looking for something around 150, but considering the coils are going to be pretty close together the 170s might be the go. There is a rover guy in town i can get bits off, what coil rates come in which models???

Has your mate got any of those custom coils that he isn't using????
looky what i found
OK, I found some stuff on the net about coil rates. Apparantly pre EFI 1970-84 have 133lb/inch front and 170lb/inch rear springs. Let me know if this is wrong.
I also found a table which also list 150lb/inch and 170lb/inch. Does anyone know what models these came from??? Looks like I should be able to find a rate that's pretty spot on.
For starters i'll try to get some of the blue/white 133lb/inch ones, i'll start looking next week... if anyone has some or knows any more please let me know!!!

Damo,
The easiest way to ID the coils is to turn up with a set of calipers and measure the "wire" diameter. I lot of the early rangies (the ones with the soft spring rates) already have the coils swaped out so you really got to measure the thickness of the wire.
I think the 130lb/in coils have a 13.6mm wire and have 7 complete winding turns. If you use this as a basis then its easy to work out the spring rate of any other coil that you find cause the rate proportional to the third power of the wire thickness and inversly proportional to the number of winding turns.
For example if the 130lb/in is 13.6mm and 7 turns
and you find something with 15.5mm and 9 turns then the spring rate of this coil is
130 multiply by (15.5/13.6)^3 divide by (9/7) = 150lb/in
Ill go and have a bit of a measure of some of my coils and give you some numbers.
The ony thing with the rangie coils is that they and fairly short (normally around 400mm free length) but this is only a matter spacers of placing the mounts accordingly but again this all depends on how much weight you got.

Thanks heaps Sam, you've been a great help.
This is why I haven't attached the coil mounts to the chassis yet, I'll need to get an idea of what length the springs come down to when the weight of the vehicle is on it. It's only a suzi after all

Damo me mate has got a rear set of 4" lift 1's still i think ? .
But he is sellin alot of his spares now that some low life stole his rig and they got a goodin 96-97 mod custom 5" link f n rear rear detroit front welded n 1.6 vitara motored 4 a quick get away i guess n could give u his phone no if interested- privately but sounds like u have it sorted now? , the set he duz have was replaced for a larger wired set cause he had a shite load of weight in it ( custom rear bar ,oot long range tank , n a heap of spares not too mention the sub box!!!!!.
let us know if ya want the no.
cheers Dan
