Can i put 4.88 ring and pinions in a 4.3/4.5 (standard hilux) diff center? The diff guy reckons I can't and that they only fit in 4.88 diff centers, but other people say he's trying to rip me off! Whats everybody think? Am I being taken for a ride?
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!

go to hornsby diffs, should do them for $250ish with an overhaul..They are very good, worth the trip if you have to, we use them and have never had any issues, always install the lockers A1 never had a oring issueboxer wrote:Well I supplied him the gears so he said it will cost $350 to install them which included a full overhaul.Tiny wrote:how much was he asking> I do em for $750.00 ea
If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
Snorky told me that for 4.8s you need the right housing due to the offset of the pinion, thats why i got the right housings. Obviously the pinion is smaller so it needs to be closer.Tiny wrote:go to hornsby diffs, should do them for $250ish with an overhaul..They are very good, worth the trip if you have to, we use them and have never had any issues, always install the lockers A1 never had a oring issueboxer wrote:Well I supplied him the gears so he said it will cost $350 to install them which included a full overhaul.Tiny wrote:how much was he asking> I do em for $750.00 ea
Dont know how shonky it is, but you COULD get a spacer made up to move the crownwheel out to the pinion.
[EDIT]Where did you buy the gears from? Are they Factory Yota Gears or aftermarket jobbies? If they are aftermarket they could suit your application.

I was under the impression that you need to get a different flange or something for hem from reading the litreture, but nothing about the housing itself. I may well be wrong, I am just going off the litreture I have, but will look into it as it is good info to haveGribble wrote:Snorky told me that for 4.8s you need the right housing due to the offset of the pinion, thats why i got the right housings. When i started looking into it i asked Adam down there and he said you will need 4.88 housings to fit the 4.88 gears. I got in contact with Yukon in the states and they say that their aftermarket gears are suitable for use in the standard 4.3 housings.Tiny wrote:I was under the impression that you need to get a different flange or something for hem from reading the litreture, but nothing about the housing itself. Maybe the aftermarked 4.8 crownwheels are offset more, allowing you to run them in a 4.3 housing. Best talk to some diff places and get opinions there. Or go back to the place you got the gears from and blow them up.

Ok, so maybe STANDARD TOYO gears will not fot, but the aftermarket ones are made with the correct offset? I have being told again by my supplier that the gears I sell will fit the standard housingGribble wrote:When i started looking into it i asked Adam down there and he said you will need 4.88 housings to fit the 4.88 gears. Boxer, take the gears and your housings down to Hornsby Diffs and tell them your story, they will tell you if it will go in or not.

I spoke to the diff dude today and he said that we were right i.e that the after market jobbies do fit in the standard center!! And it's all got to do with the thickness of the crown wheel or something like that... I don't really understand diff talk all i know is that i want 4.88s . So anyway after market ring and pinions do fit in standard centers in the end! Thanks everyone for your help
All the 4.88 from the US will fit our 4.1 centres .
They had very few models come out with 4.88.
Thats why the aftermarket made them thicker so they could utilise 98% of the carriers available over there .
The 5.29s and 5.71 also fit our standard 4.1 carrier .
Altho if you have a 4.8 diff and you get the 5.29 or 5.7 they wont fit .
You can get them but its easier to get the carier here normaly $90

Im sure the carriers are all the same, just the pinion offset is differnt.
\m/
isnt the pinion offset determined by the shape of the diff carrier?? how can u get differnt ofsets in the same carrier?Gribble wrote:Slayer wrote:Whats different?Gribble wrote:measured mine the same way tonight, dont have fancy digital display but it was 21 mm on normal micrometre thingo.. so id say both you and i have std factory 4.8's. only thing is u have a differnt carrier to me aparently??Slayer wrote:I dont think so.Gribble wrote: Here is a piccy with the method of measurment i used to measure the wheel in my 4.88's. yer i figured afterwards that u woulda thought i was talkin about the hemis... anyways, as for the 3rd member we will call it... anyways looks like my 4.8s arnt worth pissing on seen they are std toyota... anyone got an aftermarket crownwheel to measure??Gribble wrote:Oh your talking about the 3rd member thingy, i thought you were talking about the hemispheres, the bits that "carry" the spider gears and crownwheel.
AFAIK the "3rd member" is different, the "carriers" are all identical, otherwise ARB would have different part numbers for 4.8 and 4.3,
