Do people think that 12HT's are slow?

Do people think that 12HT's are slow?
was speaking to a fella who is interested in my car and one of his concerns is he was talkin to a few people and one of them said they are incredably slow. personally i think it goes bloody well. The 1HD-T in the 80 series will blow its pants off but i find that 1st and 2nd in mine is really low, hence y it isnt quick off the mark. Would like to hear what yas think.

GXL HDJ80 Cruiser - Lifted, Locked, 315's, 3" Zorst, Safari Intercooled, High Flowed Turbo, All the fruit. AMMS tuned coal shovel, Pushing 148rwhp... + heaps of the black sooty goodness...
Out of the box, they are no rocket ship. They develop just on/over 100kw, depending on your specific tuning.
Where the 12ht has it is in its untapped potential. They are arguable one of the best turbo diesel engines ever put in a cruiser. With a bit of extra boost and fuel and intercooling, you can have a 12ht producing heaps more power than a factory turbo 80 series, without the bottom end issues the 1hd-t came from factory with.
If i can make a 2h go as good as a 1hdf-t, i'm sure anyone with a bit of confidence can make a 12ht go a lot better.
The one thing that lets down the 12ht and the 2h is its low rev range. This adds to its perceived lack of acceleration, as the driver is constantly selecting taller gears more often, as opposed to a 1hd-t operator, who has a few more rpm up his sleeve in each gear.
Whoever said the 12ht is incredibly slow obviously hasnt driven a toyota coaster bus powered by a 2h.

I drove a 295k 12h-t 60 series auto today and was disappointed. It certainly seeme more responsive than my 2h 75, but didn't seem to pull a whole lot better! I guess hauling up long hills would be alot easier going though...and where was the turbo whistle!?
(don't think the auto helped)
Just my 2c.

Turbo, lotsa boost, lotsa fuel and lotsa intercooler, makes for lotsa power.

Does it really get up and go that well? Do you have dyno specs?
What boost are you running?
What size intercooler are you running? (front mount or top mount)
What is your tyre combination and what ratios in the diff are you running...
Did you modify the ports in the head, or change the cam? etc
You can PM me if you don't want it to be known publicly... I am very interested as the ute chop I have done has made the car 200kg's lighter and its now time to get the ol girl going a little better... (already turboed with intercooler and ratios on the way).

I am running 13psi. Intercooler is a bar and plate front mount cooler. Core size is 600*450*75mm roughly. Yes it is overkill for a 60, but it fits nicely in the front grill area.Den.R wrote:Quote:- "Turbo, lotsa boost, lotsa fuel and lotsa intercooler, makes for lotsa power."

I am running 35 mt/r's, with standard 4.1 ratios. Dumbdunce off this board has a multivalve 80 series, and between his 80 and my 60, they are pretty even when it comes to performance. The extra rev range in the 1hdf-t makes it a pretty mean competitor when it comes to acceleration challenges to 100km/h. The 2h seems to have the off boost torque over the multivalve though. At 110km/h, both seem to pull just as good as each other up hills. I don't have any dyno figures for it. We have talked about doing a dyno run just for fun. I may get around to it before I sell it!!
Apart from correcting the fuel for max boost, engine internals are stock. No head work! It isnt overfuelling at full boost either. EGT maxes out at 480 degrees full boost at 3000rpm 110km/h plus.

Top stuff,
that was what I had planned to do to mine (have already fitted the 35's) and am now glad to hear that it will be worth doing it. I have just scored myself a front mount intercooler that is very close to that size although I was thinking of top mounting it with a WRX scoop. More so to stop it clogging up after going through mud but it also means less plumbing work. It will come straight out of the turbo, into the intercooler and straight into the intake. All I will need is the corner peices. I am thinking though that a front mount intercooler may work better than a top mount.
Anyhow thanks for the info... Will be fun getting it to go that well...
