IFS Wide track
There are a number of ways to widen the track on your solid axle hilux, offsetting your rims, wheel spacers, or you can do the IFS wide track kit. Both offsetting and wheel spacers are not engineer friendly where as the IFS wide track kit is. Offsetting would be the cheapest method, where wheel spacers and the IFS wide track kit are relatively the same but it all depends on how well you shop around and find a bargain.
The IFS wide track kit you can buy from various 4x4 mod shops is for the front only, it consists of a spacer and all the bolts needed plus the hub seal and gaskets. All you need for the rear is a rear diff/axle housing off of an IFS model hilux.
What you will need:
IFS hub spacer kit
IFS rear diff/axle housing (complete, you can use your old centre)
Extended brake line for rear (optional, but recommended)
IFS hub
And the usual tools in your garage, in addition a 54mm tube socket and circlip pliers.
I ran the rear housing for a couple of weeks before I did the front and there were no noticeable problems, so you don’t have to do it all in a day, but you could easily do it over a weekend provided you have everything (faster with some help).
I used a 2000 SR5 rear housing and hubs off of a 1992 surf. Firstly youll need to pull off your hub, unless you want to do all your seals while your at it, leave the stub axle intact (see pics). Unbolt the disc on your IFS hubs if you got it with it you wont need it, youll be using your existing disc (rotor). The disc unbolts on the IFS hub, but on the solid axle hub the wheel studs are pressed in, get a big hammer and hit them They will come out with liberally force. Bolt the spacer to the hub with the supplied bolts. Bolt your disc to the spacer. When undoing and doing up bolts on the hub, use your wheel on the ground to hold the hub secure. Grease up in side the hub.
You can now reinstall the hub back together and do the other side
For the rear
Swapping axles with the IFS one is very straight forward, follow the Gregory’s to remove the axle. The one thing to take note of is the hand brake cable, your existing one isn’t long enough. Especially if your running IFS rears get the IFS handbrake cable and use this, its perfectly sized and will be cheaper than modifying the existing one. That’s pretty much it.
