It's undeniable. A Properly Prepared Pajero Prevents Piss-Poor Performance!
Five weeks exploring Cape York and Super Paj (as it's now been christened ) went everywhere I pointed it, without fuss. Of course, being the end of the dry helps - there wasn't a lot of water to contend with.
CREB Track was steep, but no significant washouts/rocks/side slopes. They close the track if its wet, which is when it would be really challenging. In the dry it's a nice drive, with beautiful scenery, but I doubt if many OL types would have any trouble.
Cooktown to Bathurst Bay/Cape Melville via Starcke HS. Slow going, but no significant water. Bathurst Bay is beautiful - I wish we'd allowed more time to stay there.
Every inch of the OTL from Bramwell Junction to the Jardine River - both directions. The only failure to proceed was exiting Canal Creek - I chose a short sharp climb and attempted it without the front diff lock and didn't make it. Hit the switch and it was no problem. Even drove down the same bit on the return journey.
The fabled Gunshot Creek was disappointingly easy - only a little bit of water, and the track in use was dry and not really that steep. Front diff lock, 2nd low and punched it up the slope. One day after I was assured that people were only making it through by winching. Ended up doing it 5 times for the camera. Some of the "alternative" tracks would have been a different story - vertical walls with water pooled at the bottom.
Frenchman's Road was another 4by highlight. The climb out of the Wenlock River wasn't too bad, despite the warnings from the bike riders we met there. "You'd better walk it before you try to drive it!" They also seem quite concerned about the steepness of the Pascoe River crossing - as the book says, it's steep and rocky on one side, and steep dirt on the other, but Super Paj was never bothered. A bit of rain would have made it much more fun. The Telstra Patrol ute didn't seem too fussed either.
The last decent wheeling was the old Laura-Maytown track. The first 30 or so km was pretty easy (on a station track) but the last 50 or so km took about 5 hours. Some of the climbs up and down the ranges were steep and rocky (Frank, those crawler gears are a god-send - you're a champion! ) In one place the track started heading up a hill, then disappeared into a steep rock slope. Super Paj just crawled up in low 1st, without fuss (or front diff lock) and found the track again at the top of the hill. Views from the top were absolutely stunning, and make the whole 5 hours of crawling worth it. Anybody who takes their 4by to Cairns should set aside a few days to do a round trip: Cairns to Laura in the afternoon, Laura to Maytown the following day (allow 6 hours), then explore Maytown and the mining remains before driving out the "easy" track towards Mt Carbine and back to Cairns.
Decent 33" tyres, some clearance, crawler gears and front diff-lock. Super Paj took me everywhere I wanted to go. The only chink in the armour is the fuel tank - it's no longer quite the same shape.
All I need now is a diesel for decent fuel economy.

Scott, glad the trip went well
For sure the crawler gears really transform these trucks.
A front locker is a must also and elevates the once humble Paj into the serious category.
People never took them seriously but now the mods are available you can see what their capable of.
Being smaller/lighter than a Cruiser/Patrol is also a definite advantage.
Blairs little shorty is a real weapon to, twin locks, gears, 33"s etc it can cause the "open mouth syndrome"

scott sounds awesome, big trek up north ey, sounds awesome, and also great to see the jabbers out there showin em whos boss sounds like u had an awesome trip, i cant wait til the end of this month, im going away for 3 weeks, should get some wheeling in, if not its great just to get away and see this beautiful country of ours
yep sure did make those mouths drop when he came out with us, especially when it just kept on walking and smacked into the side of the bank up the steps at slippery rock but yeh ill agree, im way jealous of the lockers, me and miyagi were having some fun mucking round on the sections and blair just walked up it, no worries mate even got this comment from my girl, "so why dont u have "lockers", maybe u should get some then hey" hahaha blair's shorty has that 'thing', i dunno its just good
