Auto hubs to AVM help

Post by jumankum »

Hi Guys, I am trying to replace the auto locking hubs with AVM ones
They don't quite butt up. There is a solid metal ring about 2 inches in diameter in the way. It appears to be held on by a circlip and possibly another clip which i don't recognise. Is it part of the original auto hubs?
Can i safely remove this. vehicle is 88 LWB Gq Safari

Thanks James

Upon further reseach this ring i am talking about appears to be the clutch for the auto locking hubs. Is there another part i need to purchase or just remove this and bolt the new hubs on?

I cant remember any specifics, but I do remember having some serious brain-strain when fitting mine to a Hilux.
Had to look in the Haynes manual to get it right.

Worth it but.

i'm pretty sure you pop that circlip off loose the thing you are talking about, replace with avm and fit 1 circlip. manual hubs have 1 circlip groove and autos have 2 from memory. i did the same conversion to my gu's but i bought the diffs without the hubs and never saw that

remove they circlip and remove the rest of the auto locking mechinism. keep the circlip as you re-use it in the grove in the end of the axle (the one shown in photo about 10mm from end.)
fit the 'egg ring' and the inner part of the free wheeling mech. then refit the circlip. you can then bolt the free wheeling hub on.
i hope this makes sense.
