4.88's Weak
YES I KNOW HOW TO SEARCH...... nothing relative came up.....
Well with the 38.5's on their way i have also decided that it would be a good idea to change my diff ratios...
Im goin from 4.11 to 4.88 i hae heard that the 4.88's can be weaker??? is this tru?
In an 80series to btw

Yes they are weaker - the lower the ratio the less beef [4.88s are weaker than 4.11s]. The front centre in the 80 is a weak spot to start with so you need to consider your options. If you are worried have you considered transfer gears instead?
Some people don't seem to have too many problems - it depends on your driving style and what sort of tracks you drive. Your hard might be easy in someone elses book [or vice versa].

It takes some work to change the CW&P too especially if you need to change the front again after you bust teeth of the CW, so is it cheaper in the long run?
That’s the laws of physics, bigger tyres and/or more HP and you will find weak spots eventually. It’s not as much as making 4.88s stronger as making the front HP 8â€

The problem is 4.88's have a skinnier pinion gear to acheive the ratio, its simple physics and is an unfortunate byproduct of its design.crankycruiser wrote:ITs a huge job to put T case gears in a 80....
Diffs are cheaper....
The silly thing is to put bigger tyres on u really need to goto 4.88s but the bigger the tyre the more likely u are to break diffs??? they should make the 4.88's stronger wouldnt ya think

having done both more than a couple of times, I am of the opinion that it is much, much easier to change the gears in the transfer rather than the diffs. the transfer unblots from the vehicle in less time with less hassle than either of the diffs, and although it is heavy you can put it on the bench, do the work, and fit it back up. The process of installing diff gears and getting the preload on both sets of bearings spot on, and getting the gear backlash and contact pattern perfectly correct, is far more difficult and time consuming than anything that needs to happen to get a transfer case back together. diffs are messier, take longer, have more potential for future breakages, you need more special tools, then if you do break you have to source your alternate ratio and new price. if you stick with stock ratios, you are less likely to break them, and when you do, you can pick up the gears cheaply from wreckers, usually the same day.crankycruiser wrote:ITs a huge job to put T case gears in a 80....

I won't go as far as to say diff gears are a waste of time and money but they don't stand up to a cost/benefit analysis on an 80 series since transfer gears have become available. Diff gears make the 80's weakest link even weaker. how many people have you heard of who have busted 80's transfer gears??

I looked at the 4.88 but due to their possible weakness I decided to split the difference and went for a 4.556. So far i have destroyed 2 CV's one left and one right and repaced one on its way out to boot. Running 35x10.5x15 Centipieds from a 2F. So if the CV's are giving out first I still have a weak spot other than the diff. Also now I have the 4.556's I think the 4.88's would not have suited the ratios are just right now. But that depends on what you are trying to achive.
Diff Ratios are Cheaper than Transfer case alterations if your having the work done, if your doing it yourself then I would be inclined to agree with dumbdunce but either way its a close call.
Have ordered 2 Chromoly CV's from the U.S. to stop the CV's giving out the question is if we will break anything else instead.

If those break try get some longfields, you will be happy with themmatt.mcinnes wrote:I looked at the 4.88 but due to their possible weakness I decided to split the difference and went for a 4.556. Front and rear must be the same ratio or it will wind up the transfer case big time full time or part time 4x4crankycruiser wrote:Im still running std gear box and t case.. and its ful time 4wd so it woulld b a bit hard to run differnt ratios..4sum4 wrote:What gear box and T/case are you running you might be able to get away with 4.56 in the front and 4.8 in the rear

i run 35in claws in a 80's and changed to 4:56 ratios havent looked back. a mate of mine has got transfer gear reduction in his 80 and had major dramas - (he ended up chucking them, know a few others in the same boat). he wishes he'd done his ratios instead.
if your running 38's with 4:56 then it would roughly be the same as 33's with standard gearing - its an option if your concerned about pinion breakages as their in between stanard and 4:88's.
I believe if your running lockers then that makes em stronger also (maybe thats y ive had it good so far touch wood)
