22R - 22RE conversion

Post by benhl »

I'm looking to EFi my carby 1994 22r. Looking at swaping the EFI components off a 1986 onwards 22RE onto mine. can anyone see a problem with this? or have anything to say about it?

Also if you are the guy from toowoomba that beat me to toyota resellers and got the whole set i was looking at - :bad-words: to you. BUT how did it go? any points, concerns and what is the end result.

If anyone else has done this do you have any recomendations points tips etc..........

22re

Hi, I did this earlier this year.

I got my 22r carby engine replaced with a 1986 22re out of a toyota corona. I get about another 100km out of a tank.

Drives alot smoother and starts first turn of the key every cold morning.

Ahhh Efi.

My conversion was in a Toyota Bundera and It's lucky I had the 2 inch body lift, because the Inlet Plenum chamber just miss my brake booster.

yeah was looking at the height of the FEI unit - i've got 2" BL also so i think it should be OK.

Thats exactly what i'm looking for - fuel economy, better running and no stalls on steep angles. Did it increase power at all, even if only marginal?

there is nothing "wrong"" with the one i have now except for carby. then no other hassels of entire engine swap basically bolt off-bolt on. noe engine number swaps, no engineering, no inheriting other engines problems that may be there, etc etc etc.

regs 22re

I didnt convert my carby engine to efi , I got a 22re out of a Toyota Corona. There is slightly more power and a bit more torque down low.

You have to run a surge tank and I got the electric fuel pumps "high and low pressure pump from the donor car.

You only have to notify your insurance company and vic roads your engine number if you do what I did. You don't need a engineering certificate because its pretty much the same engine but with efi.

The computer is not hard to hook up either, if you have the whole wiring loom.

As you will see in the pirate thread, the wiring is the only difficult part. Bolting the parts up is very easy.

I've a 22RE in my '83 and the intake clears the master cylinder by ~15mm. A 94 will have a bit more room. Maybe this is why we never got injection on our 22R hilux's?

I have a spare EFI intake setup with fuel rail but no harness or anything else. Go and rape a corona or celica at the wreckers i reckon.
