Slop in drive shaft to transfer case
Hey all,
2.8 Diesel... hit the 70 - 80 K mark and on backing off the juice, get a bad vibration coming from what sounds mid chassis. Hit the throttle and it goes away, and on going down a steep hill off the pedal, thus assuming that there is still load on the drive train, I do not get it.
My initial thoughts was the exhaust pipe vibrating but ...no...
I have noticed that there is a bit of slop in the tail shaft going into the transfer case.. not a lot but enought to worry. My current thought is that the bearings in my transfer case may be shot and backing off the throttle takes the load off the gears and lets them bounce around. Hit the pedal and the load goes on and stops the vibration, back off with engine breaking occuring which I am assuming will still load the box and it also does not happen.
Any thoughts or experience??

Yeah, I had given that consideration. A wiggle of the tailshaft does not appear to give much give at the bearing.
It does sound like a bearing noise and when driving, while hitting undulations on the road it will change intensity. I may take the boot of around my gear stick and see if I can hear anything better with a clear path to the underside of the car.

Well, guys, we were all wrong.
As we speak my poor old truck is up on a hoist with no gearbox. The prognosis is a stuffed clutch that was infact the offender in making the noise, plus one worn bearing in the transfer case and another in the gear box.
The gears are relatively O/K. The gear / transfer is being rebuilt today, the flywheel machined and a new clutch put in. Should have it back tomorrow if all goes well.
After this, not much more could go wrong with the old girl.

Hmmmmm yep....
I get a little change out of 3 grand.... and that will pay for the exaust pipe if they end up breaking it as it is pretty corroded.
But such is life... since buying the truck I have had new suspension, new rear diff (air locker), new stearing arm, new brakes, new paint job due to hail....
There cannot be much more to go wrong with it (touch wood).... just about a new truck.

Ah.. an here comes the ultimate left brain vs right brain argument
For the last 3 years I have been on a vendetta to prove that the Rodeo is not a cludgy peice of crap that cannot perform with the popular makes. In doing so I have suspension lifts, etc etc as per my last post. Why did I get one... because at the time I wanted a ute... and there was literally nothing available where I lived except one solitary Rodeo. My FJ40 got stolen years ago and I am still suffering the loss.
Trouble now is that when do you put a stick in the ground and say ... NO More!!! With the noise I was getting from the gearbox when I hit 90K/hr I could not sell it any way, further more, I if I replaced the truck, I would go pre air bag models, which takes me back to the same vintage. And.honestly who will buy a Rodeo as a off road truck second hand? A comercial vehiclein NSW has no warranty sowhat I purchased was totally on face value. I took the risk and am willing to accept it.
What I have spent in dual batteries, lockers, suspension, and so on could not be recovered in a trade in as the auto resellers go by red book equivalent pricing regardless of mod ( except when they want ot sell it) and to start again I would be doing all the same mods again all over!!
Ultimately, if I started again I would go a Land Rover , but what I have now... when I get it back tomorrow is something that should be 80% compatable with the 80 series Landcrusers and Luxes in our club.
I built it for touring, not agressive rock hopping, but it has been a gamble. Would I do it again... no! Would I give in to the marketing crap that is out there... sadly yes! Bottom line is that at the present moment, I cannot aford to start from scratch again.
So back to the thread... lets hope the engine is as good as I think it is!! Cause.. if it goes... the truck gets sold for scrap!

I have had no regrets having my Rodeo. But after 5 years it is time for a change of scenery. I have a friend who will hopefully buy me a Disco at the right price and sell it on to me. It will be a late 90's model. I don't mind having an older vehicle if it is the spec I want. There is no new vehicle on the market which meets my needs. The Disco will get a rear locker, decent tyres, 2in lift, cargo barrier and winch bar. The UHF, phone kit, winch will come over from the Rodeo.
I agree that the Rodeo can hold its own but I have the 2.6L petrol so I want more power. There are some places my Rodeo won't go. I have found them and have the panel damage to prove it There are a few trips or tracks that I refuse to go with our club. No point destroying your car to prove a point one way or the other.
By the way. I finished my degree yesterday. More time to play 4wds now

Struth, after just getting the gearbox, transfer case & rear diff bearings all replaced in a hope to find a noise....... no bloody hope of getting rid of it now... it owes me too much!!
One day I may get it back from the mechanics..... it has been in for nearly 2 weeks now and they will not give up. In the process they have found 2 transfer case bearings & one gear box bearing shot, the crush bush ??? (is this the correct term), in the rear diff stuffed so this and 2 new taper bearings, plus a new cluch (the clutch was also stuffed) and flywheel regrind. The guys are so frustrated with not finding the actual fault that I put it in for they stated they were not going to charge labor, just parts. I am stoked with their enthusiasm. Every time I say 'do you give up' they say no!
This goes back to another post I had re the quality of a franchise ....tune shop (fill in the dots) that was given the mandate when I first bought the truck to give it the complete once over. They clamed they found absolutely nothing wrong with it. A dedicated gearbox mechanic now begs to differ.
Lets see what I come out with.
