wiring a up 24v winch on 12v system

as states guys i know i need 24v so do i connect another battery in series with mine is there anything else i need to do will my alternator charge both batteries set up like this a diagram would be good

just having a thought will i need another two battries and another alternater to charge the two battries for the winch

if this is the case what alternater do i use and where can i mount it on a holden VN 5.0L can i some how put it where the ac compressor use to be?

I think I understand what you are saying - run a second (24V) alternator plus two extra batteries in series (to make 24V), so you have your normal 12V system plus a 24V system purely for the winch... is that what you mean?

That would work. It's kinda fiddly though. Do you have to have a 24V winch?

Anyway, you would want a 24V alternator. All you have to do is find one from a 24V vehicle and make it fit somewhere the motor can spin it. The bigger its output the better. I would just go to a wrecker and try to find an alternator off some smallish 24V truck. More than likely you will have to make your own bracket or modify your stock AC compressor bracket if that's where you're going to put it.

I would honestly go for a 12V winch and keep it simple but if you want to do it, and it's worth the hassle and expense to you, and you have room in the engine bay for two more batteries and a second alternator, it should be doable.

ok apparently you can run your standard 12v system off one bat and my 24v winch off another two battries connected in series all while my alternator charges all three battries

i can't see the alternator charging the battries as 24v so i would have to split the wires so 14v of charge goes to each individual battery

i relise that it will stuggle if i have spotties on and winch going etc but aparently a couple of guys run this set up

whats your opinion as i don't want to set up another alternator

Mate I would be looking at gettinr a new 12v armature for the 24v winch motor it would solve all problems to convert the 24 to 12.

you can make a 12/24volt set up with 2 x 12volt batteries and two solenoids or a double pole solenoid.

The main problem with this set up is running the winch unloaded, the winch will turn fast enough to throw the winding out of the armature.

What BARTSO suggested is achievable with use of a Bosch (not Delco, they are too small) series/parrallel switch used to convert the 12v running system into 24v for the starter motor out of a Volvo (European) truck. You would definately need an auto-eletrician to wire it in (one with truck experience) and the cost would not be cheap. But it can be done.

It takes about 2 hours to install using a solinoid set up from a forklift.

This solinoid is far superior to the solinoid available from most auto electrical wholesalers

well the truck has been put on hold so i am doing it proper getting a 24v alternator prob off a GQ safari and mounting it to my engine
