Have been quoted about $800 change over for my power steering box on my 93 80 series and think this is crazy since the seal kit is about $40. Has anyone rebuilt a power steering box and did they have any trouble? What do I have to look out for and are there any special tools needed.
Cheers,
Ben

Re: 80s Power steering box
Mate, if you find out, I'd like to know too. My steering wheel moves a bit each side on full lock more than the wheels so my steering wheel is rarely centred. Around $800 for a changeover or rebuild seems a bit excessive.Benszook wrote:Have been quoted about $800 change over for my power steering box on my 93 80 series and think this is crazy since the seal kit is about $40. Ive just replaced seals/oring/circlips/etc on my box (about 20 all up), you do need special spanner/tools (nothing that cant be madeup). It is a very delicate job, so if youre not mechanically minded, dont do it yourself.
Be aware that the worm gear is very complicated, you might need to dismantle it to replace a couple seals, but if not necesary, don´t touch it.
Not trying to scare you, but its not fun.
