So I'm getting this 1984 LR Stage I, and have a couple of questions. First of all, what can I expect from the axles ? Specs ? It has the 3.5 V8, how about the tranny and TC ? Specs ? Are they generally good vehicles ? Solid built ? What should I check further out ? Can I wheel with 35s without breaking anything ? I sure hope it ain't no 10 spline crap, I've heard stories about..
G/box and t/case will be lt95 as per 4spd rangies( almost bullet proof), diffs should be salisbury in the rear dunno about the front but will be fairly tough. On all accounts a good vehicle if you like leaf springs, 35" tyres and any rover = breakages !

front diff is 10 spline,fit air locker with heavy duty shafts or maxidrive.CVs will be fine as they're same strength as 110 but slightly longer,other than that they're a good vehicle.
mal story recons that stage 1 cv's are the strongest because they are one piece with the stub shaft, series 3's normaly have 10 spline inner and 24 outer from memory,i heard its cheaper to buy an old stagy than buying cv's new for it .
the gearbox itself won't give any trouble,but if you have big power and load the transfer intermediate shaft may spit out thrust washers.To fix this just replace the intermediate shaft,gears and bearings with a 2nd hand army conversion from a Perentie.
How about the frame, fully boxed ? How is the suspension ? Travel ?
There is a problem though, the tranny is having some issues in 2nd gear (can't remember what exactly), it suppose to be caused by some bearings in the transfercase - is this a difficuilt fix ? Thoughts ? Thanks.
The chassis is almost the same as a normal Series 3 (2 "c" sections welded together), just a few crossmembers are different to fit the engine and drivetrain.
If the gearbox has problems in 2nd then it is a gearbox, not a transfer case problem (but the 2 items have one single casing, so you need to pull the whole thing out to repair either one. LT95 boxes are very strong and reliable, but expensive to repair.

Ugh, I was hoping the frame was boxed. The owner says it jumps out of 2nd gear, or something. Had to change the main-shaft (?) bearings in the TC ? I assume you mean they are married ? Expensive ?
Hm. The ratios looks pretty low, though - 47.3:1 crawl ratio ain't too bad.
What kind of bodies did the Stages 1s come as ? What's "best" ?

Ah, I see. I like flatbeds, but since this one already is converted, it'll stay that way. Here in Norway you'll get major problems with the government authorities (DMW in US ?) if you increase the stock tire diameter more than 5% - imagine that ! I'll let the plates stay, I think - I have enough (5) tagless vehicles already !

Army springs give terrible wheel travel unless you modify them they are way to stiff - SIII 109 military rear springs are 470lb/in!!!
The pictures below show the wheel travel when you reduce the military springs from 470-270lb/in (rear) and 315-240 lb/in (front). When those pictures were taken everything else was stock (stock military shocks, etc...).

I'm also looking for pics of underneath of a Stage 1--particulary around the gearbox area, as i'm putting an LT95 into a series and would like to see pics of where the chassis xmembers are re-located to fit the longer transmission in.
