HELP! gearbox blown on F55P DAIHATSU UTE

Post by Jest3r »

Hey I have a DAIHATSU F55 Long wheel base UTE with a 2.5 DG Engine now my gearbox just shit it self in a big way, one of the main bearings in the transfer case blew and now 2-3 gears are nearly stripped so basically I'm looking for a new transfer case because the gears I bet would cost a fair bit new so I'm wondering where I can get a second hand gearbox or even a cheap seconds hand F50 I was thinking of getting a 5 speed gear box but can anyone tell me how hard it is to stick in I know the tail/front shafts are different sizes but does anyone know where I could get parts if I was to do something like that. Thanks, Josh

can take any pictures if needed by the way, need help ASAP, I'm in QLD ( Hervey Bay)

EDIT ADDED SOME PICTURES OF MY LITTLE TRUCK

How you going?
The transfers are the weak link in these early daihatsu's, my one stopped working when bearings started coming out the back of the case.
Daihatsu said that replacement gears were going to be big $$$, that's if there were still even any in existence to sell.

Your best bet would be to find a rocky box, a 4 speed should just drop right in, it is the same box after all, and a 5 speed can be made to fit by cutting the tub to fit the 5 speeds offset shifter linkage, fabbing up a bit of a brace to support the transfer case, and by sourcing new or modifying your existing prop shafts to fit.

And yes, suzi racing's gearbox would fit, but seeing as it's a 2.8 DL, you really should swap the motor over while you're at it! ;)

Why don't you have a look at
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Daihatsu-F10-cha ... dZViewItem

(item #4591018806 on ebay if that didn't work), email him, see if the box is any good, and make him an offer 'cause it's been relisted.
Of course, how you get it the remaining 320 k's to where you are is another question, but the price is right, and at least it's in QLD.
Have you gotten any prices from the wreckers yet?
Otherwise, keep looking for a reco'd rocky box.

What models have a gearbox that would suit my F55? that's a F10, wouldn't the gearing be totally different since they were a 1.0 litre engine not to mention they were 3speed weren't they? local wreckers have nothing, any wreckers you know of that might have what i'm lookin for? I'm going to brissie next weekend.

thanks, Josh

Yep, that's a F10, same 4 speed box (or maybe slightly different ratios), a little motor and totally different diff ratios.

Check out http://www.gonzo4x4.be/the%20Taft/gears.htm
This guy knows F50s! :D

These things are pretty rare now, and if wreckers have them, they want too much for them. I got quoted a 5 speed box for $2200 from one joint, it's just not right!

I had the same problem with the gearbox of my F65. Now I have a Rocky 5 spd gearbox. The bellhousing and the mounts are the same. The driveshafts are different, so I took parts of a Rocky shaft thats mounted to the gearbox and put them on the F65 end that's fitted to the axle. You will have to shorten the rear shaft because a 4 speed is longer then a 5speed version.
I took the shifter of my F65 box and fitted it to the Rocky gearbox. Unfortunately in your case a shifter of a 4 speedbox won't fit (F65 has 5 spd).
Last problem is the parking brake, a Rocky gearbox has none, so I used the backingplates of a Rocky and mounted them on my rearaxle. Now I have the parkingbrake on the reardrums.

Other options are F50/F60 gearboxes. They will fit (F60 is 5 spd, so you need a shorter rear shaft), but are hard to find. Also a F20 box will fit, it has the same ratio as yours. But you need to change the bellhousing and priseshaft (?) , the one thats fitted to the clutch. In these models only the diff. ratio's are different.

Hope it's clear to you, I you have any questions about the Rocky gearbox swap just send me an e-mail.
