What GPS are you running???
Just wanted to know what GPS people are running and why? I'm thinking of getting one but are limited in how much I can afford. I want to be able to have a bread crumb trail for marking in "found" tracks not on maps and marking future campsites.

I have a Garmin GPSMAP60cs
Very happy with it.
If you want a good Good GPS without map or all the bells and whistles have a look at the Garmin GPS60 for around $300.
The Garmin Etrex can be had cheap now and is good basic unit for around $200
Look here http://www.gpsshed.com.au/
and here http://www.ja-gps.com.au/
Some guys on the board have had good deals on Magellan GPSs from the US too.

I've got a Garmin GPS60 and it's bloody great!!! I have mapping software on my PC that has NZ topo (and street) maps which alows me to import routes off my gps so i ca see exactly what track i was on and where i got to, and i can also make a route on the pc then import it onto my GPS. Its a peice of piss to use. Just great.
I have the Garmin e-trek, cost me $50 Aust in singapore
It cost me more for the car cradle and ciggy and laptop power cord ($80) All up it cost me $130.
The olny problem is the cord for the laptop is serial and my laptop only has USB ports on the back. Will get round to finding a adaptor oneday.

running a desktop slimline pc (p4 1.6) off an inverter on a custom built roof mounted rear shelf, 7" touch screen on dash, usb gps mouse, running lastest destinator with map monkey for round town, and oziexplorer for when the going gets rough.
If you are interested in the pc route, have a look at the forum @ www.mp3car.com , so much info there. I also run all my mp3's off the pc (currently running frodoplayer for that), an added bonus of going the pc route. U dont need a high spec pc, i know of ppl running old 466mhz pc's, and it does the job for them. only problem is that you have the instability of microsoft products (WINBLOWS!), although hasn't been a prob for me yet. I still carry paper maps though.
Just another option.

Most comp cars run Magellan FX324 BW or colour and they are excellent (though SD card is only upto 64m)
Why? Becasue of separate numerical key pad for keying in point quickly, easy to use and large (6inch?) screen.
Downside? Cost and permanent power unless you get a UPS etc.

Last time I checked you could not get street level Maps of Brisbane for Oziexplorer. You can get a "Brisbane special map" but I think its 1:200 000 or something like that.
I was told that they have not made them yet...I think it might have something to do with the curtains fading in summer or confusing the eating time for the cows if we had daylight saving
I'm from Brisbane, Australia
Re: laptop
There is software for turn by turn navigation available for laptop or PPC such as Destinator.bluemu wrote:bogged wrote:oziexplorer.. but its not really great for street level.. but about the bestbenjamin78au wrote:Does any one know of software for Australia that I can load on to a laptop and get turn by turn navigation. There is also street level mapping available for programmes such as Oziexplorer. It isn't turn by turn though.
