Anyone replaced an alternator in a 1.6 Vitara with a higher output one or had the original upgraded? If so, what did you do and how well has it worked.

Repeated attempts using all sorts of alternators and it's been an ablsolute nightmare.

Later model twin cam ones (like Baleno etc are no good due to pulley offsets and stuff). one of my friends said he had a 92 Swift one (1.6 injected) and that was good. MUST be a single cam one or all the pulleys are 6mm out of alignment.

If anything now I'd be going backwards to a 1.3 Swift alternator - they're much easier to get access to the brushes, and output wasnt so important with a carby JX with no power anything.

Having now blown up my Vitara must reassess situation. Dammit.

If it bolts up where the Vitara one does and fits perfectly I wish I knew you months ago......

A daewoo nubira has a 100amp alternator, and with minimal alterations to bracketry it fits on the injected and carby 1.6 Vitara motor.

That sounds great, thanks. I'll look into it. I know in the U.S. there are companies that can upgrade your output to what you want by the amp but I don't know if anyone does this in OZ.

I had an auto electrician upgrade mine to about 100 amp from 55, they just rewound it I believe should be a fairly easy mod and it didn't cost the earth either (can't remember exactly how much)

Yeah it can be done - but it's basically a full rewind of the armature so it's not a home job. I know in Melbourne City Auto Electrical Services used to do it - they're in Little Latrobe off Elizabeth St. Dunno anywhere else off the top of my head, but anyone who rebuilds alternators should be able to do it unless they just whack new bearings and brushes in and call them "rebuilt".

My problem was not the output it was the design and access to the brushes - repeated mud dunkings clogged them up too quick, so I was after a different design alltogether.

If this isn't an issue for you, then get the original rewound. It saves you hair pulling about alignment......

If it fits up without any mods and has easy access to brushpacks Im really keen - how much you want for it?

If you are going to fit an alternator from another vehicle the best one to use is the Bosch Commodore VN 5ltr alternator they are 85amp easy to make brackets for and its only 2 screws to replace the brushes and water/mud doesnt seam to bother them much. Its also easy to wire up with only 3 wires.

This is prob the same alternator that Mick(v8zuki) has at work.
