swb ute conversion
swb ute conversion
how are we all?
Question! i have found a swb ute body , a bit pricey atm but trying to neg price.
want to do a swb ute conversion just cant find help with this question.
is a swb body the same size as a ute back?eg if i cut the swb body from 3" behind the sliding window will the ute back fit there or do i have to make a piece of metal fit there? people also say that you cut the 1/4's and move forward but i have also heard that this will incur problems in engineering, the bloke i wanted to do it was helpful at the start but when i gave him some q's he couldnt answer them and brushed me off.some one out there would have done the conversion any help and/or pics would be greatly appreciated thanks

There were prices floating around for that on here somewhere. Probably the cheapest option is to hack into it yourself just behind were it needs to be prettied up and pay someone from there. Probably work out a little cheaper than me fixing those rusty azzed rear sliding windows... or that is the excuse I would use...

and now for a barrage of stupid questions because its easier sitting here than going and measuring one at the wreckers....your better of using an SWB mq body and grafting the gq quarters onto it. That way you have a removable hard top option
jessie928 you've done this or seen it done?
I've had no experience with the MQ's, I'm assumin all the body mounts line up? steering column brackets and the like? do you have to run the older style dash? I suppose engineering will be a b!tch because of fitting and older cab?
Thanks
Simon
i cut and shut my lwb. the swb may be different but i am certian to can bend the rear firewall out to fit. get am mq ute one without the bubble mine cost $200 + $160 glass. my truck is in members under chevy smurf

go and measure a Mq SWB, you will be suprided
actually here are the specs
mq
Wheelbase 2350mm
Length 4,070mm
gq
Wheel Base 2 400mm
Length 4240mm
body mounting points are no drama, easyer than making up a new wellback properly, at this stage its QUITE easy to incorporate a fixed body lift by welding in higher braced brackets
The ability to both have a STEEL hartop and softop far outweighs any disadvantage you have while adjusting body mountings, welding on GQ quarters is piss easy. front guards, grille, dash all bolt up easy.
you will be suprised how similar mq SWB tubs are to gq, Just look at the early GQ utes that still looked lile MQ's
Also
Cheers,
Jes

So... is it something you've seen/done before or just something thats been thought about? (or even anyone out there that knows more than us)
Either way you've put up a different way of doing it the biggest issue's I can see at the moment is the 200mm overall length difference which from photo's looks to be in the engine bay? and puttin an older body onto a newer chassis might mean its fun convincing an engineer its a good idea and to get it signed off.
You've got me interested, a guy at work in a mq parks beside me of a saturday so i'll have a measure then.

teh 200mm is in the lenth of the bumperbars, check out the mq front and rear overhang, you will have found exactly where the extra length is.
you WONT have ANY issues with engineering as no-one will ever know/need to know/care. When you replace the tags on the new cab all is sweet.

Go a soft top..
Glenn Binskin still has the shell from his navy blue soft top mav sitting in his shed. Yes he rolled it but the damage aint that bad. Could be easily straightened. And already has a cage yay !!! And comes with a softtop...
If you haven't seen pictures of the thing try and track them down it looked Hawt !!!
Give hime some $$$$ for it and then give some panel beater some $$$ for straightening/painting and away you go. I think it is already engineered...they don't need to know it is on a different chassis...

If you can be arsed any sheet metal joint can press up a bit of steel sheet with ribs in it fo strength and then roll the edged to suit or you can do this yourself. also looks better than a striaght peice of sheet. cus the window to suit. best to use a standars window of a gq mq gu ute etc to it isnt a costom piece when you break it. Nick Mannell had this issue when he did his GU ute, broke the glass one day b4 one of the shows when he was putting the tray on. had to special order a peice pf glass and it wasnt cheap
I am getting close to choping the lwb, and am thingking of grafting paert of the rear on for shape....should be pretty easy.
