LT230T rebuild?

Post by v840 »

Hi all,
As the name suggests I drive a 40 series toyota but it's a bastard to drive on the road and uncomfortable to boot, so Im looking at buying a rangie for a DD and light off roading.
Im in a position to get one that has everything I want and is perfect apart from a whine coming from the transfer case. Its an 86 5 speed so Im assuming that its the LT77 gearbox with the LT230T transfer with the tapered bearings (please correct me if Im wrong)?

I was wondering how easy it is to rebuild this transfer case and how much Im looking at (ballpark)?

Is it worth doing or should I look for a complete second hand unit?

Or should I not bother with the purchase and keep looking (bearing in mind that it is a very good price)?

Sorry for all the questions but I know very little about RRs so I need all the help I can get :D

Cheers
