There has been talk for years of a national set of vehicle standards....

Firstly I realise most of these modifications will require prior approval, inspection and a mod plate - I just want clarification if it is possible to approve them in QLD in principle.



Although the rules state that you are only allowed to increase vehicle track by 2" (for a 4x4 vehicle with solid front and rear axles), are you permitted to install axles from another vehicle/model that are wider than this? Or if you install wider axles must you reduce the track by reducing the wheel offset.


If you install axles from a (leaf sprung) vehicle that is (from the factory) Spring Over Axle (SOA), into a (leaf sprung) vehicle that is (from the factory) Spring Under Axle (SUA), can you install the new axles SOA (provided the suspension is suitably modified so that the regulations regarding overall lift height and compression and rebound travel distance are adhered to).


Is it possible to have a vehicle with a rear axle hydraulically operated steering system (designed for offroad use only), approved for use on the road - provided that the system is configured to only operate in low-range and is physically locked (pin etc.) in the "straight ahead" position for road use.
Is vehicle chassis and or body modification such as bob tailing and ute conversions permissible, to what degree before engineering is required.


With respect to custom barwork, other than the general requirement to be rounded and minimal forward protrusion, what are the requirements for

Bullbars (stinger, winch bay, nudge)
exo cages
sidesteps/sliders
rear bars


Does DoT recognise CAMS compliance for internal cages and harnesses as engineering compliance for registration?



Must airbags be replaced if triggered?

Why are there so many regulations stopping 4wd modifications when all we want to do is go slower, but so many allowing modifications to performance cars that allow them to go faster?
Why are certified engineers allowed to approve massive modifications such as V8 engine transplants but not the fitting of body lift kits?
What is the maximum approved tyre increase on a 4wd ( and is this different to a "passenger car"), what are the rules for tyre and wheel mods "Light Commercial Vehicles" and defines a "Light Commercial"?
How is the standard size confirmed? For instance if one manufacturer makes a 7.50R16 (common standard size) and that is 31.8" and another is 32.4" which one is considered the "standard size" for the vehicle.
Given that 4WD tyres often would change in diameter up to 35mm as the tread depth wears away, if the "maximum increased diameter" is only 15mm how is this legal or enforcable?
If a later model of the same vehicle series (eg 1993 instead of 1990) has an approved tyre that is a different size can this be used.
If differentials are swapped on a vehicle is the donor vehicle's approved tyre size used when assessing legal tyre size, if these differentials are Factory Spring over axle is this standard factory arrangement allowed to be used on the vehicle?
Why has QLD not allowed certified engineers to approve increased tyre diameter (in line with required safety modifications) despite this being clearly marked on the modification placard?
If a vehicle is engineer approved in another state and it is shipped to QLD due to the owner moving will it be registerable to drive on the road in QLD.

Another question:

Are Air lockers illegal? Also are factory equiped diff locks illegal?

I was told when I got my vehicle inspected that my air lockers (in fact any type of diff locker) were illegal, so if this could be verified it would be good.

Considering some vehicles come with factory differential locks (eg my Maverick) I dont see how it is illegal.

There is a clear ruling in QLD that permanently locked axles are illegal for road use (eg CiG lockers or spools).

The legality of an autolocker or a shimmed up LSD might also be questionable.



Obviously this could not be applied for very old cars which had no differential but there's no ADR's that could cover them anyway.

Hmmm DOT avoiding giving answers, who would have thouht that :roll:

They are really there own worst enemy, they have a chance to resolve a lot of issues and then try to avoid it. I wouldn't be surprised if they re-schedule again.

actually - drilling a hole in your diff may be considered illegal.

how about definately not :lol: . that thread creates more questions and doesn't precisely answer the ones we have.

yeah the meeting occurred, two young fellas from the pits.

Pity the meeting degenerated with some members of the club trying to argue old offences...

Got it on video, some info can be gleaned, but they didn't get much of a chance to answer posted questions.

I believe they will be forwarding answers to my email in near future, which reminds me, i should probly chase it..

Short version, if you can read the ADR's, codes of practice, and regulations and find a way to make it legal then carry the evidence with you for when u get pulled. Prime example is the green falcon perched atop a cruiser chassis, all legal, but carries lotsa paper.

Blue plates are ok, but if inspector believes they are dodgy then they can be overruled and then you have to do the evidence thing again.

Attitude changes everything, they are the guys with the power, don't start an argument unless you want to lose, we all have something dodgy on our rigs.

When i get more info, i will post.. and if anyone is interested in gettin these guys to do a talk i'd recommend them, they seem to be trying to make it all work and are happy to give as much info as possible.

Thanks Pinball, I'm disappointed I missed the meeting...I'm only just starting the stage where I would like to get my rig more capable. I was totally unaware of all the legal restrictions untill recently when I started looking into it.
