I don't have the NL, but I can tell you about mine - same chassis with smaller motor.
The ride is quite pitchy off-road, and if you let the tail get away on-road it's quite difficult to catch. Off-road, the ramp-over and departure angles make up for it.
ARB don't list much for the shorty, but the LWB suspension stuff fits. Using standard height/heavy duty rear springs (910) I got approx. 2" higher than standard (about 3" higher than the original sagged springs) and the shocks are straight out of the catalogue - N64 front, NFI rear.
Not for everyone, but I'm pretty happy. The larger motor in the NL would be real nice, but personally I'll look at a DiD swap when the 3.0 keels over (with 140k I don't think it will be soon...)

is the 3.5l realy worth paying a bit extra for in a nk/nj or dose the 3l do the job off road good enough

Off-road, I find that the 33s still catch me out in high range. On a hill which looks relatively simple the engine will run out of puff and stall in high range 1st.
On the open road I often use 14l/100, which I believe is because the gearing is now too tall for the 3.0 torque characteristics - even with "goodies" like 2.5" exhaust, hi-flow cat, snorkel and K&N filter.
An auto would help on off-road hills (and in low range it's only traction which stops it - not often these days ) but get worse economy on-road. I reckon the 3.5 would help in both situations - the SOHC from the NL would be better again.

I have a NJ 3.5 shorty and the thing does ride terribly. It seems way to firm, it has the adjustable shocks that are always on the softest setting, with very little difference between the three settings. High on the priority list are new shocks.
The 3.5 DOHC is never short of power with 33's, with the k & N filter and free'd up exhaust this did wonders for the bottom end, basically power is never a problem, right down low, i do most off roading at about 1200 - 1800 rpm, just where is sounds really nice and is ready to go.

Had a NL shorty for about 12 months. Ran it with 35" claws, 2" body lift and 2" spring lift. Mine was an automagic and lacked drivability with 35's. With the road set of 33's it was beautiful to drive. Plenty of grunt and comfortable ride as well. Auto with airlockers was an ideal combo for most of the offroad i did, but downhills were tricky.... at times
